Default How to diagnose blue smoke out the tail pipe

I'm aware this is caused by burning oil. my question is how can you tell if its valve stem seals or oil control rings?

Does it smoke while accelerating or decelarting? Generally if it smokes while decelerating, the valve stem seals are bad.

Read this and it should help figure it out. Much more info can be gleaned than a compression test.....

generally valve seals will smoke on start up and not during normal driving.

Ring problems usually smoke all the time.

Just make sure your pcv system isnt sucking oil up. I would disconnect the hose to the intake and see if it changes.

Also if this is on the 94 listed in your sig, I would unhook the pcv and see if you still have vacuum in the crankcase, have seen some bad intake gaskets on LT1's, could suck oil out of the lifter valley.
