What LS6 Heads Do I Want?
All mods are in my sig.....
Do I want the LS6 heads out of a Vette with the sodium filled valves? And what year Vettes had the LS6 heads that will bolt up to my 2002 Trans Am?
or
Do I want the LS6 heads out of an 2005-2006 GTO?
What is the difference between the sodium filled valves vs. regular valves??
Thanks

the 243 heads that came off the LS6 will bump up your compression and i think it has bigger valves. the sodium valves are on the exhaust side only and it will keep that valve and port running cooler, and also the intake valve is a hallow stem to make the valvetrain lighter, it also comes with yellow springs and titanum retainers. this is all i know about the 243's on the z06 but i dont know much about the ls2 243 heads

both ls2 and ls6 have the exact same casting head, even same p/n but the ls6 version has a lighter valvetrain and can take more lift. if you can find those ls6 heads i would shoot for that

People have there own preference and I'll let you make up your own mind. There are those that like sodium filled valves because they come from the vette and they're supposed to be better.
There are those that don't like the sodium filled valves because they feel they are weaker and this will show up when running stiffer springs.

there is A LOT of completely wrong information in this thread
the ONLY difference between ANY of the 243/799 ls6/ls2 heads is that the 243's out of the c5 z06's with the ls6 had sodium filled valves which made them a hair lighter, the performance increase doesnt really matter with them, the LS2's came with either a 799 or 243 head which are identical and contain standard valves...any 243/799 head will work for you..

This is correct info and all you need to consider other than the Z06 heads bring a little more $$$$

Casting Number 243
Head: 2001 LS6 5.7 Liter Passenger Car
Material: Aluminimum
Part Number:
12564243
Combustion Chamber Volume: 64.45cc
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1
Intake Port Volume: 210cc
Exhaust Port Volume: 75cc
Intake Valve Diameter: 2.00 inches
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 1.55 inches
Stock Head Flow Numbers
Chamber 64.45 cc-0.100-0.200-0.300-0.400-0.500-0.550-0.600
Intake 210 cc------62----126---184--224---251----256---257
Exhaust 75 cc------57----108-- 143--163---176----180---183
317s
Chamber 71.06cc----0.100---0.200--0.300--0.400--0.500--0.550--0.600
Intake 210cc-----------66-----142-----196---228----236---238-----240
Exhaust 75cc----------59-----104-----137---155----167---173-----177
The 317 is a 243 variant casting with "72cc" Chambers which most people get and use for forced induction. The 317s are used for trucks, but it is a great budget buy if your are thinking of boosting. There is very little you need to do to the 317s to get them to have great flowing numbers. The 317s as you can see have the same intake and exhaust runner size as the 243s.

still not completely correct.
the 243 heads off the 2001 z06 does NOT have the lightweight valves ( hollow or sodium filled )

Do I want the LS6 heads out of a Vette with the sodium filled valves? And what year Vettes had the LS6 heads that will bolt up to my 2002 Trans Am?
What is the difference between the sodium filled valves vs. regular valves??
Well I want to bump up my SCR a bit, and get smaller head gaskets and bump up my DCR
AS FAR AS WHICH WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOUR SET UP. IMO, THE DIFFERENCE IN THE COST FOR THE HOLLOW VALVE 243s VERSES THE SOLID VALVE 243s IS NOT WORTH THE SMALL GAIN. YOU MAY THINK OTHER WISE.
