Question Offset Grinding a stock Crank? Cost?

What's required for Offset Grinding a stock Crank?

New pistons and rods required for a .1 offset?

What's the typical cost for the machining to do an offset crank?

Longevity?

I wouldn't mind picking up a few extra cubes for the RS's new engine.

Thanks

no idea on machine work......

just an FYI, offset grinding will require a smaller "big end" rod which "COULD" cost more than just getting a forged crank.....

I do these all the time, you will need different rods and pistons, the big end of the rod (journal size) will be reduced to 2.00" (.100 difference) or down to 1.88" (.220 difference). By turning the crank down to those sizes I always recommend heat treating or ion nitriding the crank and cryo treating it. I think after you do that it will be fine strength wise. The cost for a fully finished crank runs $600-700 for the labor and processes. Let me know if you need more info. Dave

It would be 3.72" stroke on a 2.00" rod journal.

i just got this done to my motor here in town buy a good machine shop. it only cost me $150 for the labor. when i taked to the crank grinder, he explaned how it was a very simple process and he has done it hundeds of times for SBCs and many others. you can get the scat 2.00" rods for only $400 from a scat dealer. i have a pic of the set up under the nitrous section. the piston will have to be a custom job so that is the only expensive part. i only had it stroked to 3.71 from a 3.62 stock.

Give Texas Speed and Performance a call, they have been doing this for a while.

Everyone has been doing this for a while it is not a new thing. People have been doing this on motors since the 60`s. To go .100 under to 2.00" big end is where the stock old small block chevy`s were. They never had any longevity issues. We do this on the LS1 often it has worked so far.

I heard 2.00" is what NASCAR cranks use, so it can't be a problem. But after grinding the crank and having to get new rods and pistons, I'd opt for one of those $1000 Eagle cranks with a 4 inch throw instead.

I think my cost was $300 on top of what I was already paying for the motor. Pistons & rods were not extra, I had to get forged ones anyway. I got mine from ARE, might want to give them a call.

I'd wait & see how the new Eagle cranks are gonna work out.

How much stroke can you offset grind? Is it possible to get the 4" throw to plan for a 383 with offset grinding alone?

nope. you can only go about 3.72 with the 2" journal and about around 3.84 or so with the 1.88" which cost a whole lot more.

I think that journals would be too small to live taking the stock crank to 4 inch. I don't think all factor cranks can survive being cut to 3.82 and some fail in the maching process.
