Simple green is a decent start with plenty of elbow grease (who wants to do that?) or find a machine shop that has the acid bath they can throw them into like they do for blocks and such to get them clean.

I had mine put in a bath and the shop only charged 50 bucks. Well worth price of saving that elbow grease.

If you're talking about a green scrubber/sponge then it should be fine and not so abrasive that it'll mess anything up

Do they need to be bare, or can the springs, retainers, etc still be on there?

IMHO, it'd be foolish not to lap the valves while you're at it.
