They are the same head just different casting styles between the two no one head is better than the other.

If you can swing it for a stock head do 243s just IMHO and its just that my opinion. I have had both and I preference 243s.

Only thing I would suggest is the 241 over the 853. Perimeter bolt valve covers look hideous. If you have vc's and coil brackets for either than it doesnt really matter. They will make the same power in the end. If you were to re sell them in the future though the 241 would look more appealing to someone that would want nothing to do with the 853 because they just know its the older model.

you are thinking of the 806 heads that had perimiter bolt valvecovers. the 853's were center bolts as well. they both came off 99 z28's

Ha! Yes, you're right! Then again. No difference with the 853/241's. Porting would change any small thing that may have been altered btwn the 2 anyway. It could be a simple water jacket route that was different that wouldnt affect flow. I'm not really sure.

thats a good point, i guess the ports are where they are and i didnt think for some reason that a cnc port job is going to make the ports the same no matter what head. good call sir.

yeah, cause its gonna be the same program that will run for either head. At that point you could grind off the casting number and make your own. lol.

I dont know what the heck I was thinking with the 853's. You clearly said 99 camaro. That should have been a dead giveaway. 2 years off from having an LS motor and I am slipping!!!

ok, i was looking at the heads again. is there any difference in the valves between the two? or should there be anyways? i noticed in the 853 heads, the exhaust valve has a pretty good dish to it, where as on the 241 heads, it is flat. i know this will give me a little more compression, but should there be a difference in valves or did someone change them to something else? what would they be?

here are some pics i snapped.

853 are sandcast and 241 lost wax IIRC.
So in theory the 853 might be a little more rough in the ports. But if you are CNC them, then it doesnt matter.

SPM cast, not wax...better consistency due to less core shift and "smoother" finish...if there are large triangles below the exhaust ports then they are SPM cast heads
