cheapo-synthetic
My engine is due for an oil change in a little while. It has about 80,000 miles on it. It is in real good condition. Is it OK to put in synthetic, if so what brand and type/weight. Will using synthetic cause oil burning in an older motor?

Yes it should be OK to use synthetic in your motor. Try Mobil 1 in any of the 30Ws. Some LS1s tend to have high oil consumption with the M1 30Ws. I have used 0W30 in mine since new, no abnormal oil consumption at all, less than a .5 or so in 7500 miles on the average.
You could also try M1s new 0W40, I just changed to this on my last change and so far so good with around 5K miles on it.
Another oil that has been showing some good tests has been the new Castrol Syntech 0W30 German made stuff. Make sure to get the German made 0W30 though as they have a version that is made in the USA also,,,,it does not seem to be near as good.
