Default Worth it to Rebuild (98 ls1)

I am currently searching for a motor for my 240sx and have come across several options.

1) Buying a complete running 2001/2002 ls1 for around $1500ish give or take a couple hundred

2) buy a lq4 and go that route

3) or I can buy from a local guy, 1998 ls1 longblock with coilpacks, crank pully, intake, injectors, motly complete but it has a rod nock. He will sell it to me for $400 and I would just purchase the parts necessary to get it running good. It has 72xxx miles on it.

What I would do is rebuild it with new; rod bearings, cam and main bearings. New piston rings, oil pump, water pump, timing chain, arp rod bolts.

I figure that if I go with the rebuild it will end up costing me about the same or a little more than if I just buy a used motor. However I will have a freshly rebuilt motor that I know will run good for quite a while. The downside is that it is a 98 motor and heads.

What should I do? I can do most of the rebuild myself, just have the machine shop do the bearings. I have yet to check how much that usually costs.

Thanks

The big problem with the 1998 motor isn't the heads, I believe they are the same as other LS1's. The PCM is different and is harder to tune. If you see forced induction or a big lumpy cam in your future, it would be best not to use the 1998 PCM.

Well I would not be using a 98PCM as it does not come with one. I will end up just getting a custom flashed PCM, as I do plan to upgrade the cam, nothing too large, maybe a 228 or so. I am looking to reach the 400whp area, already have longtube headers and will add a ls6 manifold also.

99+ harnesses will run a 98 engine without issue

Nothing wrong with a 98 engine. There are a few minor differences, but nothing major
