Default Need help picking cam 87 rx7 lq4 4l60e 4.1 etc

Hey guys.

I have a 2004 lq4 in a 1987 rx7.

It's rockin the stock 4.10 diff with lsd blah blah.

I currently have a stock engine with
-28 lb lsx injectors
-ls6 intake
-dual exhaust (2.5 w/ xpipe)
-truck manifolds (don't think i'll end up with headers $900 + for a decent set)
-4l60e with vette servos, beast sunshield gear, 2200 stall, cooler etc

Now I have :
TSP stage 1 243's w/ prc springs/retainers
comp timing set
comp moly p-rods
gtp "36 lb" injectors (aren't these 42.xx at 4 bar?)

getting a walbro pump also...

So, the big thing, I need to pick out a cam.. you're probably fully aware these cars weigh around 2800 lbs wet with an lsx..

I was thinking of something like the MS3... but, I don't know if I should go smaller or what.. I'm hoping to putt around in the car around town and not have it stalling all the time putting it in gear that kind of thing..

With 2800 lb curb weight 2200 stall and this large motor with 4.10s do I need a 2500 3000 rpm stall to use an ms3 streetably? The trans is "built for 450 hp"
I was hoping not to grenade the transmission, perhaps your thoughts on different cams?

I appreciate your input! Thanks in advance.

I'd look up Pat G or Ed Curtis to get a custom grind, running stock manifolds you are going to want a lot more exhaust duration than intake, and for a larger cam anywhere near an MS3 you'll want around a 3,600-4,000 stall (can be tuned to be street friendly)

i've been checking out the comp XER274 cam

http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...csid=1092&sb=2

think this is too crazy for a 4l60e with hp tuners programming a 2200 stall the servo and a light car with short gears

98 ls1 4l60e computer...

The main thing I think is going to hold you back is the 2,200 stall. I was running a 220/224 in my original 5.7L with a 2,800 stall. The 2,800 stall was actually too small for my baby cam and you could really hear it at the track. If money is an issue, I'd say get a bigger stall now and wait on the cam or else you will probably be disapointed with the new setup. A 3,600 stall in a stock F-body can knock as much as a half second off 1/4 mile times... Being lighter I would think it would make a bigger difference in your car

It was alittle big in my 346, but idles great in my 404 stroker, I went with a Trick flow 238/242 .595/.595 112lsa. With a 3,800 stall I didn't notice any low end loss and pulled like a freight train up to my 7,000 rpm limiter... I can't wait to see how it performs in the stroker

mark, thanks for your insight!

So, you ls1 gurus, will I be able to tune for the lope of a cam larger than 225 duration and .560" lift @ .050 with the 98 ls1 ecu and 4l60e?

I mean tune it so i can put it into gear warm or cold and not having it stalling all the time... bogging out isn't a big deal as with the light weight crazy gearing and displacement the car is retarded and spins like crazy anyways...

The HP tuners seems as if it should be able to tune out any problems with more advance and some VE tweaking, maybe I'm out to lunch?

In a short answer, yes. You will want to start with the "idle airflow" and to start maybe set the "desired target idle speed" to 1,000rpms. After the idle airflow is close you will beable to lower your idle back down somewhere close to stock.
For a base to start go into the "idle airflow" and add 2 acrossed the board.
Go into you "spark advance" from 0- 2,000 rpms add 2 degrees of advance.

That should get it fired up and running for you
