What a nice surprise :D
So i bought a 2000 LS1 from this guy. He said it was totally fine, worked great out of the car, no problems.
Now that im actually gettin some money to finish the swap into a 95 Z28, i went back out to the shop to look at everything i need to do. My original plan was to just get headers, lid, LS6 intake, new spark plugs and just get it going since it will turn into my DD.
Oh and i was gonna port and polish the heads. So i take them off and i find the engine looks like ****. The piston heads were all flaking, had debris in the piston chamber. Take a look at the pictures.
So now instead of small bolt ons, I am just gonna rebuild it. Cause truthfully i dont know what else is wrong with the engine. I will just tear it down, inspect and clean everything so i know whats up.. Im thinkin bout gettin some 5.3 heads (i will port and CNC them myself), cam, and 383 or 408 stroker kit. What do you guys think?

I was curious how do you port and cnc a set of heads? Im new to all of this and I have been looking at heads for sale and they usually say one or the other, either cnc or hand port. Isnt cnc just a version of hand porting but its done by a machine in leu of the hand? What would be the benefit of doing both orocesses to one set of heads?

OP - Yeah, looks like the rings are on the verge or shot. How many miles were on that motor? Too bad you didnt get to do a seafoam treatment on it to see how bad it really was/wasnt.

Do a search for engine builds and head swaps, I think you'll find that the tops of the pistons are generally pretty funky. Post pics of all cylinders on the heads and get some shots of the bores paying attention to any scoring, then we can better help you to judge what you have.

They're not supposed to look like that though. That's bad. Like said, piston ring is bad and burning oil. Personally, I'd just get some forged rods and pistons if I was going that far as to a rebuild. Like said before, make sure the cylinders look ok and not scratched.

Yea my pistons have 107k on them, I have my heads off right now, and they look NOTHING like those! A little carbon on them yea, but not flaking and burnt to **** like those...damn...I would say just go ahead and rebuild it. Make sure the block is ok though too...

I am all for more cubes. But if you are going to go bigger you might want to look into different heads. 5.3's are good heads and make good power but you would probably do better with 243's or an after market head. I bet a set of 243's could be found for pretty close to the same cost as the 5.3's.

Well the guy who sold me the motor said it had 90k miles on it. But who knows..
Also, with the knowledge i have about CNC, i do believe that CNC is the machine? And you have a program such as mastercam that you draw it up on and then the CNC cuts it for you.. But idk my dad has 30 years worth of experience with that stuff so he would know lol..
Ya we tore the engine down tonight and the piston rings didnt look so good.. i got some pictures of them. But surprisingly, there was no scoring in the cylinders at all. I tried showing that with my pictures but just a light hone, and i think im good to go. Oh and i inspected all the cylinders and they all have no sign of scoring and look just like the picture.
Seafoam treatment? never heard of that..
And ya im still not sure if im strokin it out or not.. Maybe just forged pistons and new pistons. But ill see if i can afford a couple hundred more for the 383

Lol i dont know, maybe?.. Could nitrous do this to the engine? I wasnt the safest buyer when getting this engine. This is what happens when you dont get a good backgroung of an engine.

Yeah CNC machine runs a program. I hand ported my exhaust ports until they were pretty shiny. Wasnt all that comfortable with jackin with the intake side over the 5 angle that was already done to them by the machine shop.
Looks like it had the oil put in from the factory and they just put a padlock in place of the drainplug.
