Default Frustrated with machine shop

I have a new ls6 block i bought a 383 kit from texas speed and the parts in my signiture. I took it to the machine shop thursday and they told me i had to do so much machine work. They also told me they have never dealt with ls1 engines before but they dont like texas speeds balancing work.I dont know bout the rest of you guys this isnt how u get my business texas speed specializes in this the never done a ls1 and they gonna bash texas speed.

Ok enough with my whining I do have a couple questions.

1)Is there any machining needed to install the kit.Im talking as in clearancing i know the bore will be bigger.

2)Has anyone had any issues with texas speeds balancing and did anyone have to rebalance there setup ?

3) They said i will need to have my block machined to use mls head gasket its a new block and dont ls6 use mls stock? and the new heads from texas speed may even be refinished to except mls gaskets i know these are bolt on.

4)what would be a fair price to do the machine work for a 383 stroker ls6 all new parts they wanna charge 1200 for machine work and building the shortblock.

That's when you stop the conversation immediately, thank them for their time, and hang up the phone.

Based on the rest of your post, I'd pick your block up and run far and fast. Find a shop that's experienced with LSX motors. If not, you'll more than likely be doing this engine build twice.

Good luck.

They'll have to hone the cylinders for sure, but they may also align hone the mains (especially with ARP studs), and cut the deck surface. Depending on the rotating assembly, they'll probably need to clearance the block so that the rods won't hit with the 4" stroke.

MLS gaskets like super smooth surfaces to seal. Other than surfacing the block and head deck surfaces, there shouldn't be any other machine work to use the MLS gaskets.

Sounds fair, but it depends on how much they're gonna have to do. The balance of the rotating assembly just may be a difference in one machine to another, or one operator to another. On some balancers, you can balance a crank, take off the bobweights, put them back on, and the balance will change a couple grams.

DO NOT DEAL WITH A SHOP THAT DOESN'T KNOW LS ENGINES!!!

I tried this, and it was a several thousand dollar mistake that resulted in a engine that burned a quart of oil every 200 miles. They were a top of the line engine shop for old school small block chevy's, fords, and hemis, but not anything "recent". They fucked up the balancing and put the reluctor wheel on backwards. Big mistake that ruined my LS1 427

Well im looking around for a different engine builder. I called virginia speed they tell me their builder will not assemble my engine using my parts. I have to buy from them because the builder makes his profit off of buying the parts.
What kind of bs is this?

I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the balancing work on one of our rotating assemblies. If someone thinks there is (machine shop) then please have them call us and we would be happy to run over everything with them. It's not surprising to hear another machine shop talk down someone else's work. That's how many of them make their money.

If you can not find a builder you feel comfortable with using, you can always throw everything on a pallet and send it to us and we will do the machining and assembly for you.

Thanks!
Jon

I've seen many engines on here from TSP and have had great results. Sounds like that shop is trying to make a quick buck!! I would leave and never call them again.

dont know if you have resolved the issue with finding a machine shop. I am from Martinsburg and have had good luck with Gunthers Machine just outside of Frederick MD, Jeff has a good reputation in the area and is a pretty nice guy.

cheers

You definitely need to find another machine shop, first question should be if they have experience with Gen3/4 GM engines.
