Default Which valve springs

I was thinking of getting 918's, but after reading some posts on here, I am leaning away from them.

Are there any dual springs out there that fit the heads without machine work? I don't want to have to change springs all the time - I want them to last 50k miles minium. I would also like the peace of mind of duals. I am getting a custom ground cam and don't know the specs yet, but I'm guessing it should be around 230ish and 580ish max.

Any input would be appreciated!

Just use the 918's, they are lighter weight and good to over 7000 rpm.

If you are willing to go with a smaller cam, (low 22X range, under .560 lift), XE grind, and don't race often or go wild with rpm (no need to with a smaller cam anyway), 50K miles could/should be attainable.

I know a couple locals well past 30K with B1/T1 type cams on 918s (non-blue stripes). I think they will make 50K easy. I plan to leave mine in for a long time as well.

A couple other keys to longer spring life? Get the light weight retainers (772), and always let the oil warm FULLY before going over 2.5-3Krpm.

I believe comp is using a brand new material for the 918's. Supposed to last to 50,000 miles. You probably won't leave them in that long anyway.

Under the right conditions I think the old ones would last that long as well

I do race a good bit - almost every weekend. I will be shifting at 6,400 RPM, so I'm not beating on it too hard. I will be leaving them in for quite a long time - I can't afford not to - and I really can't afford to drop a valve!

I guess I'll wait and see what the cam ends up specing out at and see what the cam grinder recommends for springs.

I'd still like to know are there any doubles that don't require machining?

rev duals are a direct drop in. i ran them with my old TR230. its bout 350 for the whole kit from TR, the springs that is.

Patriots new gold dual springs are drop ins and are suppossed to be kick azz as well as the new Comps 921s (or is the 912s) one of those are the right new comp drop in duals good for .650 lift!

I would go with one of these dual for added insurance and piece of mind regarding dropped valves, etc.

EX616's with titanium retainers all the way. I had Comp 918's from my old cam already installed so when I did the cam swap I thought I'd leave them in since they were OK with the TR224....I was very wrong. The car would not go past 6000rpm at all, like it was hitting a wall. I threw it on the dyno just to see what the issue was and to see if the air/fuel was OK....result:
357rwhp/369rwtq
I installed the 616 with the titanium retainers and the car pulled STRONG to 7000, so I put it back on the dyno and it put down 447rwhp/439rwtq. That's not to say that the springs actually gained me that power, but they let me rev high enough to get to where my new cam really pulls, and that's with my crappy/first try home ported heads.

From what I hear, Patriot's springs, or the new 921s are pretty much the top dogs. The 921s will do what you want and much more. I have no idea about going that far along without changing the springs. IMO bringing it up it 6400 is giving the motor a pretty good workout, and I would change them around 30k max just for piece of mind. Maybe that's just me. As for the REV duals, I've heard there was a possible "bad batch" that went out sometime last year. Haven't heard of any problems as of recently and they ARE good springs. Do a search and see what pops up. Most of the advice you've gotten so far should do ya anyhow.

IMO, occasional 6400rpm bursts is no biggie. Now, if you're gonna live at that rpm it's a different story.

But I still maintain that if you have a mild to moderate cam (no XE-R grinds, no huge lift or duration) and take the proper precautions (don't abuse a cold motor, don't live at high rpm, use lightest retainers and valves possibile for your setup, etc.), that valve springs should last for a very, very long time in a street mostly/only car; and 30-50K should certainly be doable IMO. If you're going to race often, have a massive cam, big heavy valves, see sky high rpms, etc., then regular changes may be necessary for any valve springs you may choose....

Thanks Terry - that is a great price. What lift will those springs handle reliably?

Also, do I need new valve seals - I have pretty new ones (<10k) on the heads now, but don't know what kind the machine shop used. Should I just replace them for good measure?

Crane duals are also a direct drop in. 2500 miles on mine and no probs.
