Default CAM HELP! Have 228/.588/114LSA Should I swap for a G5X3???

OK Guys, Oil leak upon WOT, car needs MAIN SEAL FIXED and steering rack needs to be dropped. I COULD swap my CAM while they are there, BUT????

My Car: 2001 C5 , A4, 3.42 Gears, Patriot 59 CC Heads, Kooks LT Heads, No cats, Z06 Titanium exhaust, Intake, ported TB, UD Pulley, YANK SS3600Stall, and a Comp Cam 228/228 .588/.588 on a 114 LSA. Crane Dual Springs (That came with Patriots, think only good to
.600 lift??) Hardened pus rods, forged pistons.

Not a daily driver. Current Cam Has nice lope and decent Power.

Looking at a G5X3 Cam, Here is G5X2 and G5X3 Cam specs

G5X2: 232/ 240 .595/.608 114LSA

G5X3 2xx/2xcx (dosesn't give specs) .600/.610 114LSA

I am in a Delima because Car already runs well and is tuned well. I was told by a good friend that it would only pick up about 12-15 RWHP with this Cam over my existing set up. Then It has to be retuned and who knows how that goes? Then I would need approx. $450 Cam, $600 921 Dual Springs, Cam extra labor, Tuning costs, and then who know if it is worth the money I spend with the increases FUN Factor and extra HP??????

I don't mind the aggressive sound, (Kinda think it would be FUN to have it sound so mean (Change of Pace since it is NOT a DD) and pick up the extra Horses)but am concerned with turning my Vette into a less refined machine and won't be that much of an increase? I already can run Low 11's on my set up now.

What do you guys think????????

I need to make a decision by Monday April 12th...

Thanks so much.....

Um, well I guess I'm not really in a place to give my advice since I'm such a noob. Your current set up sounds sick, and I would be totally happy for a long time with the power that you are putting down. The whole car sounds like it's insane. But, on the other hand, modifying cars seems to be an addiction and nothing is ever good enough. Mid to low 11's N/a without a whole lot of hassle(I use that term lightly) sounds great. I would stay with your current setup but if you have the dough to get it retuned and supporting mods, go for it. You only live once, and nothing beats making horsepower, but breaking stuff sucks. Hell I don't know.

Thanks brother.. Yeah I also heard or just read I Might loose some low end switching from My 228/228 to a G5X3?

I have a 3600 Stall, but still. I would rather have good low end vs a Top end Queen. I knwo the G5X3 is good all the way around, btu I would HATE to loose low end and off the line torque.....

The tuning part is scary because it is already tuned well (Chris Robinson) and i would hate to get a new Cam and then the tune gets butchered, especially with a Stall in there.

Do they leave most of my tune alone?? I mean the 228 isn't THAT much smaller.

ALSO How Much HP will I gain. If it is 12 RWHP, that might not be worth it, especially if I need new springs....

I already have 100 Shot! It was tuned for it, but haven't sprayed in awhile because had a few issues. But need to get it back on the dyno and get everything working before I spray again.

there is no need for the comp 921's.. plenty of other very good double valve springs with lift ratings of .650+ and over 1/2 the price cheaper. I personally have the patriot dual gold "extreme" springs and they are rated to .660 lift and were $275. The regular patriot duals are good to .650 and are $250.

The comp cams 228/228 is very good proven cam and it'll be hard to top that in a light c5.

I am running 7.3s @ 92mph w/ 1.52 short time spinning just a hair out of the hole right now with a DA of 2000+. My setup is...

226/228 .588 114
hand ported/milled 317s
ls6 intake ported tb
kooks lts ORY cutout magnaflow
under drive
thermostat
suspension
4000 PTC
373s
full weight (less prostars), race weight is 3469..

I'm moving to a FAST 102/92 setup bigger MAF and bigger lid.. Retune (tuned for nitrous right now). That should put me VERY close to 6s... After that a set of AFRs will go on and should put me solidly in the 6s... Hoping 6.8s.

That is pretty damn good for a full weight car that I drive to and from the track with AC and radio. Can't even hardly tell a cam is in it with the cutout cap on.

I say keep it, I love this cam!

Yes, your power band will be moved up in the rpm range quite a bit switching to the g5x3.

Search the dyno section for graphs on the g5x3 and compare it to what you have down low. With the bigger cam and a FAST setup, you might be able to pick up 30rw.

max out the cam you have before you go any bigger, bandit. you are already at .588 lift ,so going to that g5x3 really would not net much of a gain if any . i could be wrong but i think a cam upgrade needs to be at least .030 to see any real changes in performance. btw , i think that g5x3 is a beast and i may consider it over my custom grind that i have in mind .

i want to upgrade from my tsp 224/ .566 cam myself , but i'm going to go with a ss 4000 yank and maybe an 92/92 intake set-up . if my money is right at the time.

I posted on the OP other identical thread..LOL!! honestly, the 228 is a good all around cam. I am in the same boat as you. I run a 230 size cam and thought about switching to a cam 3 degrees more. Not sure if its worth it.

djFury05, Navy,Stover , Lemons, Fury, Mac2002.

THANKS Guys. Great Feedback. I WANTED the Cam cause it would sound MEAN and pick up ponies, BUT, it sounds liek YOU ALL agree that I ain't gonna pick up THAT much (of course I will pick uo some hp) AGAIN, I am already right there to swap it, but it will still be over $1K to do it so it ain't free or anything.

Also, I haven't been spraying. I blew my engine after the nitrous, not because of it, but on the dyno it was the straw that broke the cammels back. So I want to run her on the dyno to se where I am at. I mighe be a bit RICH because of the tune for Nitrous.

Maybe I should tune it for NA sinmce I only will spray ocasionally. Either way I want to get it dynoed and also spray it so I knwo it works and what the A/F Ratios etc etc are at. since it has been a long time.

Who in Dallas fills bottles now that RPM is not around (I just heard).

Bandit....

Why don't you sell your heads for some extra cash and then put that towards a set of AFRs or the like? I think that would be your biggest gain. After that sell your intake/TB and put another 300$ with it and grab a used FAST setup.
You will have a VERY solid 228 cam setup, you should give the "big cam" guys a run for their money and beat most. It is ALL in the heads!

You'll need to flycut the pistons. X3 will not fit with your heads.
