Default valvetrain?

ok i bought a shortblock from a friend that had 68k miles on it. rode in the car the shortlock came out of a day before and everything worked great, no noises fantastic oil pressure.. changed all the gaskets, put ARP rod bolts in it, ARP head stud kit, ls6 cam. the motor got a set of stock 241 heads, cometic head gasket. everything torqued to specs.

car fired right off, sounded great, starts right up. next day start it and let it run for a while and get to operating temp and it starts making noise (i'll try to get a video soon). now it makes the noise constantly. mechanic says it's not a low end knock that he scoped it and he thinks it's valvetrain. he swapped the stock rockers with a stock set off my old motor, still noise. car hasn't seen rpms over 2k or been driven because this noise is worrying me. cars still holding good oil pressure.

i'm being told we should pull the heads and get them to a machine shop and replace the lifters. what would you guys do in this scenario?

oh the cars a 2000 SS. motor came out of a 2001 ws6, stock shortblock.

Lifters don't just collapse overnight. I assume PR's have been checked for straightness since rockers were pulled...?

yessir. and everything was fine and quiet for a while until we let it idle and warmup, that's when it started making noise. the push rods where the same that came in the motor and worked fine/quiet when it was pulled also.
