Default Cam & Idle, Where Are You At?

I thought it would be interesting to see who has what cam and where you idle at.

I just swapped out my 228/228 563/576 on a 114 to a 233/239 596/605 on a 112. The car is fairly loppy now with the new cam. but will get more loppy because my car is idling at 1,000 RPMs. I need to go back for a retune now but was wondering what others have cam and idle wise.

Watcha Got?

I've got a X1 with the idle set at 900, I wish it was a little lower though. Would be cool if ya'll could post a vid to hear how your car idles too. I would but my car isn't running right now .

Looks like you went from 0° overlap to 14°. Should be pretty noticeable change even at 1,000 rpm idle.

221/226 .550/.575 114+1 Cam Motion currently in my RCSB @ -4.5°. Idles at 800...give or take ~15-20 rpms according to hptuners on an 87octane conservative tune.

244/248 .595/.595 115+2 Comp XE rolled over at 975rpms. Sounded sick ***** with cut outs opened at 16°. VID - https://ls1tech.com/forums/6497767-post3.html

224/230 .581/.588 114+2 Comp XER 900rpms. Pretty sleeper with -2°.

And there are many more, but the wind has changed direction and I forgot what all I have had since I am the worlds worst at keeping records other than oil change frequency.

Sorry, The guy said he is going to take the cam. He hasn't picked it up yet so we will see. If he doesn't pick it up by next Monday I will repost it or I can email you if you are interested?

Thanks,

Bill

My new cam just got installed and the car was fired up yesterday. I only heard it over the cell phone but it sounded loppy.

It is idling at 1,000 right now. I'm not sure if drops once it goes into closed loop? The car now needs to be tuned since the cam is so much bigger than the last one. In addition, I had the 5.3L heads shaved by .023.

That is lots of cams.

Someone calculated my overlap at 12*. Any idea on what this means for performance?

I am not sure if mine is going to hang at 1,000 or if it will drop when it goes into closed loop? How much does idle normally drop when going from open to closed loop? That is one thing I never have paid attention to?

Thanks,

Bill

the amount of overlap means that you will get a little bit of loss of efficiency down low...but you will also gain some efficiency on the top end.

the overlap itself isnt always a bad thing...sometimes its the placement of the overlap... how much of that overlap os before topd dead center and after top dead center..
this can make a huge difference in idle quality...especially if you dont change the injector boundary to match the cam(reference to when the injector sprays fuel)..if its sprays the same as stock...you waste a lot of gas at idle and get poor efficiency as it shoots right out the still open exhaust valve
if you make the injector shoot a little later you can improve idle quality and get a better idle combustion...

I've made some pretty huge cams idle at 800rpm with no issues and yet I see people struggle sometimes with the medium cams in the 230ish range

depending on the ICL...say if its a 108 ICL..then you only have 3.5* after top dead center...
however if its a 112 ICL then you have 7.5* after TDC...

you can see where this could cause some bad idle if your injectors are firing too soon in relation to the overlap

Ha! yeah, it is 12°. I eyeballed it and can't subtract without a calculator apparently.

I guess my car is not as far off as I thought. It looks like the average is about 900 rpms... I am sitting at 1,000 rpms.

I would like to see it closer to 800 so I can hear the loppy cam a little more.

My 224/228, .581/.585, 112 +2 is set to idle @ 950 RPM until reaching running temp. & then is set to drop down to 850 RPM. No stalling issues & sounds bad-***.

225/225 .589/.589 112LSA idle's at about 600, and 675-700 with the AC on.
