Default So I got stuck with a '98 block....

I was doing some reading in "How to Build High-Performance Chevy ls1/ls6 V-8s" by will Handzel, good book by the way for a new guy like me. But I found some info that makes me wish I had a '99+ ls1 motor. Some of the things it mentions that are not so glorious about the 97 & 98 blocks is how the rear oil passage are more restricted vs. the '99+ blocks. Anyone run into problems with this trying to build 450-500rwhp? One other thing that concerns me is the connecting rod bolts are weak! Quoting the book "Essentially, avoid the '97-'98 rod bolts, but the bolts used from '99 and beyond have been known to handle over 450hp without issue." Well that's just peachy for me! Has anyone run into this problem with your '97 '98 rod bolts if so how much HP were you pushing? If you have any other enlightening info about these earlier styles of LS1 motors I'm all ears because I'm stuck on completely rebuilding this motor or just starting on a 6.0L project when I get settled on post.

-Thanks

The rod bolts are a known weak point. It's too much RPM that causes problems though; they are safe to about 6500. If your building a motor it's a no brainer to upgrade them however. As far as the oil passages, it must not be much of an issue because it isn't mentioned much on here.

It's just scary to know that your rear oil flow passages are restricted more than the later Gen III blocks. oil = blood without the proper amount you're screwed!

The oil passages can be modified IIRC...... If you are building a motor just use some ARP rod bolts and get the rods resized and you are golden.....
