Default Another Cam thread - small cam for 3500-5500 rpm range.

Ok guys, I'm putting a 5.7 LS1 into my jet boat...and I'm at the point where I'm looking for a cam. I basically have it narrowed down to 2 cams, but thought I'd see what you guys thought.

Here's the for sure set up on the engine. 5.7 shortblock, ARP rod bolts, mech water pump and alternator (no other drive accessories), GTP stg 2 heads (older, done by Craig), Performer RPM intake, carb, MSD 6010, CTS-V LT headers (that's the plan, anyway), and direct drive to the pump. This engine will NEVER be over 5500 rpm; and most use will be from 3500-5200 rpm.

I'm looking at either a Comp B1 cam or VHP 047 cam...here's the specs:

B1: 221/221 @ .050; .554/.554; 114 LSA - I had an old MTI B1 cam in my Firebird and loved it's power.

VHP 047: 210/218 @ .050; .531/.531; 112 LSA - Seems like this was popular with the truck guys...but I don't know much about it.

OR - If someone knows of another cam out there that would be better suited for this application, please let me know.

I'll vote for the VHP due to smaller intake duration.

Or the LPE GT2-3 if your heads flow well at high valve lifts.

Names of cams without specs do no good for comparing.

I would vote for somthing like the Comp LSR cam 215/223 .604/.607 assuming those heads flow decently.

Although with a boat you might want some less aggresive lobes, Im not a boat guy so Im not super in touch with this area. But keep the durations in the low to mid teens to lower twenties and you should be ok.

That has an ex duration of 230 - I think that's a little big for my application.
