Default new oil pump with cam install??

Is it completely necessary to upgrade the pump? I am installing the magic stick 4 cam in the next week or so. I am curious what the experience has been with the ls1's stock pump and oil pressure after a cam swap.

It's only absolutely necessary if you know for certain that your old pump is about to fail.

Otherwise, it's just a really really really really good idea.

What about on a car with only 30K miles? or is the LS6 pump superior to the earlier LS1 pump?

....old oil pump is proabably OK but a new one is cheap insurance...

Dido for the timing chain ....my factory chain was stretched a bunch with 40K miles.... a double roller was the only way to go IMO....

Not trying to thread hijack, but I'm thinking about replacing/upgrading my oil pump at the moment...what is a good upgrade, but still economical pump to buy.

Thanks.

I figured it would be ok, car only has 32k on it. Holds great pressure so no concerns there. Now the timing chain issue, my wife is gonna kill me if my shopping list doesn't stop growing lol. Going to research the double roller chain now. Thanks guys.

You have to remove the oil pump to swap the timing chain, and while you're in there anyway...scope creep ensues.

If you do decide to reinstall the old pump, be sure to use a new GM o-ring and follow the instructions carefully. It's easy to screw up and either seat the o-ring in the wrong place or tear it during assembly. Foamy oil doesn't make much of a hydrodynamic wedge.

It probably wasn't stretched. You probably just had less slack to work with on that double roller. I just want to know why you think you needed a double roller.

From what I am seeing most of the people that are running double rollers or wanting to get them are running a mild cam with stock heads and no power adder. I say it frequently, so I will say it again. Katech C5R ran a single chain and never failed. Double roller is the seatbelts on the couch analogy.

As far as the pump you can pick up a stock LS6 pump or a ported and blueprinted pump from TSP or another sponsor for a reasonable price considering what it costs to replace oil starved engine components.

Only thing you have to fear is not getting the o-ring on there right and pinching a corner. HOWEVER, if you are conscious about this, there is a lower chance you will screw it up.
