PP LS1 heads installed - initial observations
Finally rounded up all the parts needed to get these guys installed. Fired up at 3pm today. I haven't really layed into it yet, only reving to about 4K.
The heads are LS1 stage 2 milled .020".
Engine specs are:
'98 stock cube 80K bottom end, LS6 intake, TR220/.558/114, FLPs-Borla
Initial observations ...
The valve train is quite noisy. Lot's of clattering and clicking. Nothing really loud, just noticeable.
All push rods were checked for proper seating and rockers were all torqued to 25ft/lbs.
Is this noise normal?
2K to 3K seems a little off. Not as much pull as I recall.
However, once at 3K, it finds 4K very fast! I'm very optimistic on what the results will be.
I plan on running on LGs dyno this weekend and see what the heads only chnage resulted in.
Thanks to Glenn and Chuck for their help.
Couldn't have done it without them.

I drove it the 20 miles to work this morning, to get another heat cycle on the springs.
I gotta say I am very impressed with the springs. Very smooth, nice finish, excellent seat pressure ... good looking spring.
The trip this morning was again a Sunday drive, keeping at 2500 or below ... for the most part ...
The car does seem to pull a LOT harder above 3K.
I am gonna pull the valve covers later this week and retorque all the rockers

MitchNtx: Hey another thing to keep in mind, when you have your battert disconnected for that amount of time and the computer resets it will have to relearn your setup. After 100-150 miles the car should idle better and run better. I know mine just hit 137 miles today since the head install and i went to start it up and BAM it idled perfect and I could tell a difference in power. It's kind of crazy but when this happens you will notice a difference, at least I have the 3-4 times I have had to reset my PCM or do a head/cam install and had the battery disconnected for a short period of time. Just food for thought.

Thanks for the heads up ... the plan was to drive it to work every day this week for that very reason.
That should put a couple hundred miles on it and heat cycle the valve springs 2 times each day.
After 23 miles of tooling around last night, this morning it popped right off and idled great. It was also 40 degrees here and the pavement was rather cold. So, it was relatively easy to break loose the tires ...

On my GN the spec was .030" preload +/- .010". So if you added .020" of preload by milling the head, you are probably out of spec. I think you can shim the rockers to get it back, but you really need to measure it first to find out where you are at.
