Default headucation....

Im looking to be schooled up on heads from other LSx motors that offer HP and TQ gains... Im still new to the LSx game and my T/A is getting a "hot cam", long tubes, and bolt ons soon. But would like to see what cheaper alternatives there are out there to the 2000$ cnc redicules heads. Im looking to keep my streetablilty and gas mileage and whatnot but still want to gain HP. And usually it goes with saying you got to pay to play but same goes for large HP and reliability.

So what factory heads are out there to offer HP gains? I know the 02-04 Z06 heads but thats all I know of right now.

I did my build on the cheap and couldnt be happier. I scored a set of 799 heads 4 free, gm hotcam used for 80 bux.

The only thing I spent real money on was the rear.

Not trying to be critical but the hotcam is pretty old technology and not worth the trouble to install. There are SOOOO many better choices...For instance a 224/224 will walk all over it and a 224 is old technology and considered small nowadays.... I would either wait and save up to go better or find a used cam in the classifieds and then buy a suitable spring kit new. Just get good pics of the cam before you buy it used to make sure of the condition...

And yes 243/799's are the best bang for the buck heads. They came on LS6's' LS2's and later 5.3's. If you can't find any on here go look at the corvetteforum classifieds and they are usually easy to find there. I have seen those heads flow 280CFM with just a bowl blend and a GOOD valve job.... That's a pickup of about 20cfm....

Best advice I can give you is a better cam, good beehives, and stock 243's with a valve job. Great bang for the buck combo.

I will take this into consideration and change my cam choice... Ill start looking around more as for some reasons for months ive had this stabbing feeling in the back of my mind to drop a wet kit and blow a 125hp shot thru the motor. So I may need to take that into consideration on my cam selection as well....

Also what year 5.3's did they start using those casting heads? That way it can give me some sort of comprehensive knowledge over a non knowledgable seller

Ported tb (came on car)
Ls6 intake (used)
lid (came on car)
tuned by me
ls2/ls7 clutch and flywheel
edelbrock stepped headers, x-pipe, magnaflows dumped
cm d/s 7#'s heavier then stock
MWC 9" , true trac, 4.10s, tq arm, control arms
gtp white injectors
homemade ram air (30 bux)
gm gasket kit stock thickness head gaskets

If you are buyin a new cam yeah there are better ones out there. I was lucky to pick up a used gm hotcam for 80 bux (littl88 thanks bro!)

FWIW everyone I know told me a hotcam will not break into the 11's. Also was told the hotcam wouldnt trap more the 115. Oh and there is no way in hell that a hotcam would yank the front tires with stock rims and tires. If I can find an ud pulley cheap, get rid of the heavy *** true-trac and ls2/ls7 clutch set-up, maybe a k member and some shocks. With perfect air and a lil more tuning low 11's????

Maybe just maybe

Why wouldn't it? I've seen the stock cam do all of those things on NA bolt-on cars.

It's weird people still think this is true.
