Default Help me pick out a cam for my LS1 powered IS300

Its time to put a cam in the lexus. I used to the 330hp its putting down now.

I just got a set of PRC 5.3 cnc ported heads. The engine from a 2002 T/A and has 1 3/4 headers and a full exhaust no cats. During the cam install I will be installing a ls7 clutch and a bigger radiator.

I want to make around 400hp while retaining the best fuel economy I can.

I know about the Torquer v2, magic stick 3 and tr224. Is there any other cams you can recommend?

Thanks for your help.

I would highly suggest talking to one of the more experienced vendors on here and get a custom grind. like patrickg. I got a 228/232 custom grind from my tuner. With those heads I'de be in the 420-430 whp range more than likely and the car will have lots of area under the curve prob enough to beat cars with higher peak numbers. I can nearly DD the cam too.

The reason I suggest you get a custom gind is that the cam profile/ ramp rate ect makes a big difference in how the car performs even though from the specs it'll look the same. I would look at EPS and XER lobed cams.

The FRC's will stay as long as those coils look like hammered ***.

Sciff5 - Thanks for the info. EPS was the name I was looking for. Someone suggested it to me and I couldnt recall their name. Thanks

I might be wrong but is you go much larger then a 228/228 you will lose mpg. It sounds like a 228 cam on 114 lsa would do the trick and you will make 400 with ease more like 420rwhp.

I've done that on hot rods in the past. In my opinion it adds to the clutter and potential problems with the added wiring and longer spark plug wires.

It also adds to the wow factor for people that dont know what an ls1 looks like. One look at those covers and people know that motor doesn't belong there.

Thanks for the cam recommendations.

the tr224 should make 400 hp with those heads and be the better of the cams you mentioned for gas mileage.

TR224 for fuel economy.

LS7 clutch not for fuel economy. That thing is heavy and adds parasitic drag.

Get an underdrive pulley and convert to electric power steering for fuel economy.

Get an electric water pump for fuel economy.

What ratio is your rear end? Stock 3.91? Get a a longer rear end ratio for fuel economy.

Get a good tune for fuel economy.

Lightweight wheels/tires, aluminum or carbon fiber driveshaft.

A good set of heads can increase fuel economy as well.

There are many things you can do for better fuel economy.

hahaha that makes so much sense.

but ya a smaller cam in the 224-228 range and more compression on the heads and you should see a gain in mpg.

Or how about its got 6 gears. Get a good tune and it will not suffer that much from stock mpg.

on2 all that crap combined will only add up to 3-4% in fuel savings.

The question being asked is if I buy a cam which one should I buy without throwing my mpg out the window.

I'll be giving eps a call today.

something in the mid to high 220's. i would try to stay under .590 lift. LSA is up to you. i run a 114 lsa which serves me well. runs a/c no problem, never surges, never stalls etc etc.
