Porting/Shimming stock pump vs Buying new pump?

Porting/Shimming stock pump vs Buying new pump? I have been doing some research and feel I could easily port and shim my stock oil pump rather than spending the money on a new one.
Will porting and shimming my 99 ls1 oil pump be ok rather than buying a new one during my cam swap (224/224 .581)?? Or should I just trash the old pump and buy a new ported ls6 unit? What us usually the cause of failure in the pumps that would require buying a new one?

New oil pumps are cheap insurance. How many miles on the old one?

Wow thank you for the link on the pump! I almost pulled the trigger for the same pump for $99! I wasn't planning on buying a ported pump but I figured if I was going to be reusing it and pulling it apart I might as well port/shim the thing.
