Default Porting/Shimming stock pump vs Buying new pump?

I have been doing some research and feel I could easily port and shim my stock oil pump rather than spending the money on a new one.

Will porting and shimming my 99 ls1 oil pump be ok rather than buying a new one during my cam swap (224/224 .581)?? Or should I just trash the old pump and buy a new ported ls6 unit? What us usually the cause of failure in the pumps that would require buying a new one?

Anyone? Have the timing chain, just waiting on some money for the oil pump!

New oil pumps are cheap insurance. How many miles on the old one?
Here is a good price on a stock pump.

^^ I agree

why does everyone feel they need a ported oil pump? It's not like your building a 8,000 rpm beast with a 224 cam

Wow thank you for the link on the pump! I almost pulled the trigger for the same pump for $99! I wasn't planning on buying a ported pump but I figured if I was going to be reusing it and pulling it apart I might as well port/shim the thing.

Thanks for the info guys!
