Mmm Cam/lifter carnage omnomnomnom
Custom Pat G. specced cam bought through Thunder Racing (NOT blaming them, just stating a fact) with approx 20k miles; car itself has 68k miles on the odo. Developed a tick a week or so ago and didn't think it was anything more than a collapsed lifter. Boy, was I wrong. Intake lobes on #1 & #5 and corresponding lifters. Who wants to guess what went wrong?

Over the past couple of years, cam and lifter failures such as the OP's seem to be more and more frequent. I've seen it multiple times on LS vehicles with stock cams and lifters.
I'm starting to believe it might have something to do with the lack of additives that were present in years past in today's oils.
Rotella is the only oil I'm aware of that still incorporates Zinc and Phosphorus as additives.

Also I pulled the stock cam at around 45-50k and there isn't any damage on it what so ever. The car only has 68k on the clock.

I run ford Diesel motor oil as it has the most additives still incorporated

maybe ...
springs went bad causing the lifter bounce on the cam messing up the finish and the lifter at the same time.
lifter itself just took a **** causing the above type action.
as previously mentioned, oils may have had a hand in this.
all of the above.
