Question What is the purpouse of using a 1.8 rocker?

....vs just getting a bigger lift cam on a 1.7?

So why do people run lower lift cams with 1.8 rockers instead of just getting a cam spec'd for a 1.7 rocker? I've always wondered this.

There is no reason to use a small cam and 1.8 it is for people that are not going to change the cam. If you have the oprotunity always addthe lift to the cam not to the rockers. you don`t want extra stress on the valve train.

getting a custom cam ground to your specs comes out cheaper then the 500 or so for the 1.8's. i never understood the whole rocker thing either.

Well I was thinking of adding the new $300 1.8's to my LS6 cam so that would put me approx 204/218 .583/.573 117.5. I think it would be really stealthy. I'd have to get new springs again anyways, so I am thinking about just f-it and forget the rockers and go with a nice big *** cam package like the x2 or tsp237.

There is no substitute for the right amount of duration but 1.8 or higher rockers are sometimes a good way of speeding up cam profile by way of valve opening accelleration. Example: take Comp XE profile use 1.8 rockers and come out with XER lift and performance using same cam. You should also know that increasing rocker ratio adds valve open area "under the curve".
This is the method used in Winston Cup and other racing organizations like NHRA Superstock. Believe me they make power from this method, and we can too.
