Question LS-6 or Cammed LQ4?

I have been looking at a some low mile LQ4s for my 65. I planned to install a cam, valve springs, push rods and a new oil pump on the LQ4.

Today I was offered a 40,000 mile LS6 for $2,500. I could not help but think that I might like to just throw the LS6 as it is.

I am thinking I can buy the LQ4, cam it and get it ready to install for about $2,000. But, the simplicity of plug and play with the LS6 does have it's appeal.

Just to shortcut an obvious answer, there is not enough in the budget to buy and cam the LS6.

Would anyone choose the stock LS6?

$2,500? You could find a better deal than that im sure. I would hope it atleast had a transmission attached for that price. LQ4 will be adding weight though, so the little you save from AL to FE would be a nice treat. Not that much to write home about. You probably dont have an ounce of fiberglass on that Skylark anyway.

no brainer to me... LQ4!

More cubes, stronger, and pretty much a direct swap from everything on an LS1

I think like a 90lbs. difference between the two...

Well, then I guess the next question is: would you guys pay an extra $500 for the LQ9?
I have been quoted consistently at $1150 for an LQ4 and $1650 for LQ9s in the 50,000 to 75,000 mile range.

Well only you can answer that ???? but any decent size cam that goes in it will really benfit from the compression bump.....

I personally would go LQ9

The only difference between the LQ4 and LQ9 is pistons. The LQ9 has flat tops bringing the C/R to 10.1:1 vs the LQ4 with dished being 9.4:1. I'd go LQ4 and put the extra money into some forged pistons.

My plans are not to go into the motor any more than a camshaft. This deal is a best power on a tight budget mindset. So, used motor, cam, headers and in the car. My goal is to go 108 to 110 in the quarter in my 3700 pound car. So far, I am heading towards a low mile LQ4 with a xr275hr cam, performer rpm intake, 750 holley and some edelbrock retrofit headers.

Sounds good. I was just saying if you're going to spend the extra money on an LQ9 I would have recommended getting the LQ4 instead and use the money you would have spent on forged pistons or something to make up your compession difference. 108-110 on a LQ4 platform is doable. Car craft turned 450~ crank hp out of one with just a cam and headers. Some heads and you'd def be where you want to be.

I paid $1300 for an LS6 longblock complete with melling high flow pump and a 224 cam already installed. It had 24k miles on it. You can get a better deal

Also, the very same with headers and LS6 intake and no other mods made 422/402 and put me down the 1/8th in 8.12@93 which would be a little more than your goal of 108-110 in the 1/4. I think my T/A was probably heavier than 3700 as well. Just letting you know its doable with the LS6 if you so choose.

I think that deal would make me happy too! Did the guy file a police report after that deal was over?

Nope, just shows what you can dig up if you're patient and wait for the good deal. People that have to get rid of something in a hurry always sell cheap.

Default Lq9

Well, the answer is neither. I ordered an LQ9 today. A little extra compression should be a good thing.

It has 55,000 miles for $1200 delivered with a warranty. So, it is Game on

Oil Pan to intake. No harness, trans or ecm.

If you got a trans with that it would have been the deal of the century.

No Doubt...
I'm still searching for mine though. I specifically need a one with the 58 reluctor wheel so a 07 or newer, maybe an 06....

The new LQ9 motor came this morning. I pulled a valve cover and it looks in great shape inside. Here are some pix.
