Default LS1 Carnage and 408 build up - UPDATE w/dyno sheet & video!

UPDATE: Engine running w/ video on page 2 & dyno sheet and video on page 3

Engine flooded last week, I started disassembly last night.

I guess we know cylinder 5 was on it's compression stroke, haha

Did you guys know water isn't compressible? I wish someone would sticky that tad bit of information....Would of saved me headache and an engine...

Here is what is going to replace it

The shortblock was all I could afford, along with new gaskets, new injectors, and re-tune, and windage tray, haha. Unfortunatly, I will be stuck with 799 heads and MS4 for now. It will do OK for a budget setup, but those heads and that cam with the mid lengths and LS6 intake will leave a lot on the table. In a few months I will get Pat G to spec me a custom grind with a little easier lobes. As it sits now, 11.5:1 with the 799s and a 0.045 Cometic and 8.4:1 with 77 ABDC

well as long as you get it back up and running again. i dropped a lifter when i installed my cam so i picked up a set of stock 799 since i pulled the heads. it was a nice little upgrade for the little money they were.

later on down the road ill pull the heads and get them worked and then drop a fast on there along with a new tb. but like you said. there is a lot left on the table haha.

Oh yea, My plan is to have it cradled and ready to fire Sunday night, that is if the rest of the valvetrain is OK. Haven't pulled the heads yet. Thats tonight. I broke a rocker stud while driving home from the initial cam only tune on the stock heads. I used that as an excuse to get some 799s and picked up 25 across the board. Definitely worth it on a 346 and a bare minimum on a 408 would be some port work. I need some 235s with the chamber milled to 65cc and lightweight valves. That would be nice.

How did it get hydrolocked? big puddle?

Nice little build even if you could only afford the short block for now. At least you have a solid foundation.

Flooded road, I tried to pull into a parking lot, but the water was deeper toward the parking lot driveway. Right into the engine.

that 408 is gonna tax those 799s. it will run hard for sure even the way it will be dropped in with stock 799s and ms4.

Hahaha, I am hoping since it is more of a mild cam for that displacement, and the bump in compression, that it will feel super torque-y. I always hear guys with a mild to smaller cam or a custom spec'ed mid range cam, feel the grunt down low, and that cam will definitely bring the power band down some on this displacement and the compression ought to add quite a bit of torque over a 10.5:1 408 vs a 11.5:1 408.

I never felt any power until higher 3K-4K range, now it should be a whole new animal. That was not a problem with me, BUT it will be nice to experience the other side of coin so I can give an honest opinion for a street performing cam, mild and torque-y or wild and powerful, lol

Carnage to (2) of my deep socket 3/8" drive sockets!!! Damned ARP headbolts doing their job!!!

I think cylinder 7 is a little sideways, but shouldn't be a big deal

I only pulled one. Took a friggin hour and a half. I was already pooped from being up til 3:30 the night before and getting up for work at 8. I quit after that one head. Didn't get started til around 8:30. Tonight I will do the other head, ac compressor, and alternator, valley cover, and misc sensors and grounds. Then in Saturday morning, she'll be ready to yank.

The one I pulled seems good, although I want to pull the springs and make sure the valves are straight and put a good straight edge on the combustion side of the head to make sure.

Most people that drive through deep water use one of those big black snorkel things.

This would look pretty good. Think there is a market for it?

That is an absolute **** ton of water in your intake. I would have thought you stuck a hose in there. My engine did the same thing around three years ago due to a tropical storm. It was sitting in my driveway and after the storm passed I went out to start it. I stuck the key in, turned it, clunk, clunk, boom goes the LS1. Tainted was the first person I've seen lose their engine on startup and I was the second in this unfortunate club. I'm finally at the point to where I can get everything back together now. Good luck with the new combo. I was planning on the same thing; 408, stockish heads, etc... , but I've changed my mind too many times. Now, the plan is oem L92 bottom end, TFS 225s, and a solid roller.

Thanks! Hope it don't hit any major snags along the way. You should see cylinder 8, well what didn't come running out when I pulled the head. Just see the pictures in the morning. Too dark and too crappy of a camera to take a worthwhile picture now.

I haven't taken mine all the way apart yet. I just pulled the intake manifold and some water poured out of it. Only one of the intake runners was full of water, but that was obviously enough to take out the engine.
