Default car wont stop backfireing. after cam install!!!!

installed my vindicator cam last year and ran out of time to get a full tune. had a quick tune on the car and just drove it twice and it drove fine. i did not beat on it. i installed a 255 fuel pump in it and now we cant get the car to stop backfireing. it backfires badly at part throttle low in the rpm band. as u raise the rpm it clears up. just wondering if this is a problem or just happened to happen at the same time. the cam was installed byme and my buddy who has a shop on the side and has done many cam installs on ls1s and has built many. looking to hear insight before i go tearing into this thing.

Whip out your fuel pressure gauge and tell us what you get at the rails while idling.

Get a can of MAF cleaner spray also, remove the MAF and hose it down carefully to get the wire filaments clean.

the car was being tuned. the tuner could not get rid of it. he worked on it from 11 until 3. the car drove without any backfiring issues before the pump went in. thats why i was curious about the pump. i figured at first it was just the tune thats y it never worried me until my buddy called me at work and said there wasnt something right with the car.

We just checked the fuel pressure, it holds at 62psi... for comparison, my Trans am with a similar racetronix pump holds at 55psi...

Any ideas where we should go next?

Yeah, swap pumps out. Take the variable out.

pulling valve covers this sat looking maybe to see if a valvespring has failed. my buddy pulled the drivers side and said everything looks good. going to also do a leak down on the car and make sure everything seems timed properly. i guess if this comes up with nothing i guess ill drop the tank and swap a pump but hoping not to have to do that. the walbr is there 255 boost pump. not sure if it makes a difference with flow or anything.

I stated above that my tuner could not get rid of the popping. he said he did a sweep with the timing constant and then switch it adn did a sweep with the fuel constant and teh car did not change at all. this is y he leads to beleive that its a mechanical problem. he siad his car did teh same back in teh day when afr had there spring recall. he had and inner spring crack and said it was doing the exact same thing mine does. would idle fine but pop as soon as the car was out under a load or the when u raise the rpms. so hopefully the passenger side cover is the lucky cover.
