Default suggested compression

Im looking into buying a ls or vortech block and building it with forged internals. Im wanting to build the motor to around 550 hp with running high compression and a big cam and a fast intake like so http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FST-146302/. What compression do you guys think I should run?

Cubes you plan on?
Car/truck its going in? Setup?
Intended usage? Track, strip, street, bragging?
What cam range?

Cam size and usage are going to be the biggest factors, but the others play a part in it as well.

EDIT: fuel available is a big part of street, or street/strip

What fuel you have available, and want to use.

A 5.7 with around 230 duration cam will want close to 11:1, provided 93 is around, although more comp OR less octane can be done with a really good tune. Depending on heads/pistons this shouldn't be too difficult to do. With a stroked 5.7 it is quite easy to do.

I have 93 and do you have any examples of a good cam for the setup and pistons and crank.

with stock cubes just use a stock crank. good rods and pistons and you will be golden. depending on heads, somethink in the low 23x intake range, mid to high 23x on exhaust should be a good size all around performer, maybe have it on a 112 +2 or so. that is just something i threw out there for you, no cam expert but somewhere around that will be pretty close to what the pros will suggest.
as for compression, 11:5 should be easily attainable without issues with the right head gasket and head cc.

I don't think you're getting 550 to the tire with a 346. Minimum would be a 346 stroked to a 383. Either way, 11.5:1 + depending on tuner

Should be fairly attainable in that case. I do not have the capabilities to spec cams, but for that high rating, I would think a 240 range with 11.5:1-12.0:1 compression with heads that match should get you your goal of 550 to the tire.

the vortech heads will only fit sbc type motors. you will need an ls specific type head. something like the afr 205,afr 225 small bore or tfs 215 would be a great head for you if you can afford something like that.

550 to the tire is not an easy task on a 3.9" bore without a power adder so don't be surprised if you fall short. A solid lfter motor that you can spin to moon is almost a requirement for that #.....

MINIMUM 4.000" stroke, 4.030" pistons to give you a 408. Then you would need well massaged L92/LS3 heads with lightweight LS3 valves, OR AFR 245s OR Trickflow 235s, 1 7/8" - 2" LT quality headers, FAST 102 & TB, no MAF, and a cam in the 242/250 0.625/0.625 115 LSA range depending upon head selection. Compression ratio should be minimum 11.5:1 if not closer to 12:1 to attain your goal. This is my guess list to get a 408 close to 600 rwhp
