Default Oil in my intake lid & TB

I've had the piston ring fix from the TSB for 2001+ LS1 engines, but I'm still getting oil in my lid and TB. This I'm sure is coating my MAF as well.

What things can I do to fix this? LS6 Valley cover? What else?

Are you running a K&N filter? Many times the oil is from an over oiled filter; check your MAF wires too, they will probably need cleaned. This happened to me and I thought it was engine oil. Had to use electrical contact cleaner to get the MAF wires cleaned.

It's not your rings. It's the PCV puking oil back into the intake, which has been a common problem on these cars for years. That's the reason that the "Vertical" PCV mod was developed, along with the catchcan ideas, in order to trap the oil before it goes into the into....

Verbs c'mon man, you've been around long enough to know this ****

Well the PCV system dumps it back into the engine behind the TB, which can tend to muck up the throttle body blade and right around it but it shouldn't be on your MAF or airlid.

LS6 valley cover conversion is cheap and easy so why not try it, but I still don't understand where the oil came from on the airlid/MAF.

"but I still don't understand where the oil came from on the airlid/MAF"

I'm serious, it has to be from the filter; how else could oil get PAST the TB to the MAF and lid; air is rushing IN. And if you have FTRA or FRA, it can be worse from rain, pushing the oil through the filter.

Make sense?

I put in a brand new K&N filter recently, but the oil is pooling a bit on the bottom of my TB, and is the exact same color as the oil in my lid....I thought the K&N oil was pink, and wasn't sure if when it got dirty it turned brown? I was just wondering how it made its way all the way back to the lid.

So was mine; I really thought it was engine oil. Just a thought; run a fram for a week and see if it still happens. Cheap way to try verbs.

It is NOT the oil from the K&N....It's the PCV...Been there, done that

But feel free to go buy a paper filter anyway

OK, I believe you. I had oil behind my TB ( see my website for a pic ), did the vertical mod and it still happens. But the oil on my MAF and lid was from my K&N ( my experience ). I don't see how oil can get past the TB if air is being sucked in. Not that I'm doubting you Damian, please explain. Perhaps it's time for a Greddy for me.

Viper, I am not disagreeing that the K&N's get oil on the MAF. I've had that problem before. But when it comes to being on the backside of the TB, and inside the intake itself, that's most certainly not K&N oil unless you just dipped the filter in oil and then installed it

Oil gets into the TB/Intake because it gets puked back through the PCV valve. There is some "fixes" you can try that "help" but I have never seen a complete fix. I personally run a different PCV valve that made a HUGE difference. It's the 5.3L valve, which has a much smaller orifice than the LS1 valve. It's like 2 bucks, and takes 5 minutes to install..I cannot remember the part # off hand, but just ask for the 5.3L PCV valve..

Yeah, I have the 5.3L PCV vertically now. I'm assuming H/C cars have a lot more pressure, adding to the issue as well.

I tried different valves, verticle mounting mods, etc., and some of that helped a little but I was still seeing oil on the TB blade. I have now installed a catch can, but I have no test results as of yet because the car is in storage for the winter.

I beleive the catch can or use of a filter (as some do) will help more than anything.

Tried what?

If you are visably buring oil out the exhaust, your issue is not PCV related.

Most people that have the PCV issue use less than 2 quarts in 3K miles. If you're one of the people using like 1 quart or more in 1K miles I would look elsewhere to find the issue....

Pooling sounds like a serious oil issue, where ever it's coming from. I use about 1/2 quart per 1K miles and I've never seen pooling there. I have oil residue in my intake and the back of the TB blade. Oil does pool in my verticle PCV mount, but never inside the TB or intake.

Do not do the LS6 Valley Cover conversion! Been there done that and it didn't help at all. Catch can worked wonders.
