Default used cam damage: confirm this is junk

I bought this used off the forum a few days ago, today it shows up and immediately I find several lobes with light to (what I think is) heavy damage. Unfortunately I see that the seller has already deleted the FS ad so hopefully I didn't get screwed. Ive sent a PM, we'll see if I get a response, but in the meantime I wanted some other opinions on the damage.

I remember reading a good thread about this very phenomenon just a few days ago (may have been in old search results though) but I cannot find it again right now.

I apologize for the crappy pics, I've found it almost impossible to get clear pics of a reflective metal item at close range without glare. Bear in mind these are 4-5 different lobes, not just one. Most of the cracks and damage are worse in person than the pics show.

you can see two cracked lobes in this pic

I see one lobe that is definitely trashed. No way I would put that in my motor.

I'm not an expert but that looks pretty bad and I would not be putting it in my motor in that condition

Of course the pics weren't in enough detail to show that. Hell I'm having a hard time taking pics that illustrate them on purpose.

Also oddly enough I see used cams being bought and sold constantly and rarely have complaints.

The dude said it was supposed to have only about 5k miles on it, and assuming those 5k miles aren't all 1/4 pulls, I would not expect a relatively new cam to be worn in this manner. Oh well.

Thanks for your advice guys, you've just confirmed for me (more so for me to show the seller that I'm not just being picky) what I already knew.

Some people buy used cams and have good luck with them. Personally, I would not buy used internal engine parts. Best of luck on your refund.

it may be true that it only has 5k on it, but you don't know why it was pulled. maybe he blew his motor up or trashed a lifter. my point is you just don't realy know what this cam has been through. i would talk to the seller and try to get your money back and don't install this in your motor.

What kind of cam is it? Would it happen to be a futral cam? Billet roller cams last damn near forever as long as they get good oil and you don't have an outside problem causing there failure like a lifter going bad or valve float. Alot of people Buy and Sell used lsx cams for this reason but like always theres always people who get screwed by some *******.
OP im sorry it looks like it was you this time.

that is what a regrind cam looks like when the hardend crust starts to come off. may not be but looks like the heat treatment is letting go.

Damn, a cam just isnt something to buy used, no matter what.

It takes so much work to install that it just doesnt make sense to skimp and try and savea hundred bucks.

Engine is out of the vehicle anyway so time is not a concern. It's being prepped for a swap and everything is apart getting cleaned and powdercoated anyway. But yeah, I guess I just got (un)lucky on the cam this time.

It's a "Cam Motion" 228/232 575/588 113 cam.

Seller just responded, said he "didn't look at it that close" and says for me to send it back and he'll refund me.

Good to hear the seller is communicating with you and willing to refund your money, the cam without a doubt is junk and completely unusable. Hard to believe that someone didnt notice the lobe damage before they sold it, unless they just didnt know better. Looks pretty bad to me.

You don't buy used oil pumps or clutches....

I have sold several used cams that were in great shape, but a roller cam is the only thing I would ever buy used.

It's like pu^^y. Someone else has beat the **** out of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is an LS1 not a "roller" cam/engine?
