Default LS6 cam gains for stock 02 LS1

I've got a bone stock LS1 going into a 95 mustang with either kooks or dynatechs long tubes, no other mods. Trans is A4, I will be upgrading the converter, probably to a circle d or yank 3200. Is it worth $350 to upgrade the stock LS1 cam to a brand new LS6 cam & springs (207/218 .550/.551 117 LSA)? This will be a street car, driven to work, pick the kid up at daycare, blah blah blah. It must have good street manners & make some good power long before the tach reads 5K. I'm questioning how much grunt this motor will have down low with this cam. Please set me straight.

The LS6 will typically pick up around 15 hp over the stock cam and should act very similar to it as they are very similarly specced. I personally have a tough time with that cam because its a lot of work for a small gain. There are aftermarket cams that may cost a little more but will pick you up significant power over the stock cam.

Me personally, I would not waste my time with that. There are other cams that will make you happier with similar drivabilty.

The only benefit I could see is price....seing that you dont NEED valve springs, pushrods and all the other nonsense that adds up.

We're on the same page here. I realize the gains will be minimal compared to most aftermarket cams but the price is too. My main concern is the low end grunt, is this cam going to provide me with some real torque in the 3,000 rpm range or do I need to open my wallet up a little further for one of yours?

Speaking from experience, the cam is worth it if you get cam/springs/pushrods very cheap, and tuning is cheap for you too. I personally picked up 25-30 rwhp and .25 ET and about 3 MPH with it.

To do all that work it's much better off to do a custom cam with supporting mods. Unless your just plain broke and got a ls6 cam and springs for free, there's really no point in doing it.

I think it depends on your plans down the road. Are you going to be happy with a small bump or do you want more. I am replacing my motor and drivability is most important so I am happy with a small cam.

That's good and not bad if the stuff was free or cheap ...but a 224 cam (still just as driveable and efficient mileage wise) and those same heads should run 11s @ 115+

My friend's car is running 11s with a 220/220 cam even, but it has some weight reduction. He gets 23mpg highway with 3.73 gears!

I am with thunderstruck on this one. A low 220's duration cam will provide a much better powerband and power pickup for not much more money and the same amount of work. Driveability and gas mileage will still be right around where they were at before. In my opinion the LS6 cam specs are just silly for a performance oriented cam.

not bad... my car in sig runs 12.50's on street tires... Thats stock heads/cam/intake, 1.85 rockers, lid, headers, shift kit, and 3.73's. You need a eps custom grind, then youll be in the 11's @ 117+ all day

I am thinking of the same 03 LS6 cam and LS6 heads for my 01 LS1, along with LT, catted y and a tune. Would it be worth it then?

It depends how much you are getting the cam for. If its not a good deal then you could just as easily grab an aftermarket cam with the rest of those parts and pick up more power.

150 for the cam. The cylinder heads I am finding difficult to locate.

Is this a used cam? If so, I think that isn't that great of a deal. It really comes down to what you want out of your car. If a small power pick up with a smooth idle and stock driveability is what you want then go for the LS6 cam. If you want more then 350-360rwhp you would most likely need a different cam set up.
