Best CAM for an 2001 SS LS1?
Team,
I'm looking to increase some power on my STOCK automatic 2001 SS LS1. My basic plans are to reach 400+hp w/CAM and bolt-ons alone. I'm not looking to touch the heads just yet.
Any ideas on the best CAM for this? MS3/MS4?
Future plans are heads, nitrous and converter.

look at the EPS cams, you will need a good stall converter to run any cam over 224.go the dyno section and see what people are using.I believe TSP has a sale on cam pkgs.also consider upgrading you rocker trunnion bearings with compcam bearings.

I have a MS3 cam and love it, still working out some tuning on it since it was just installed in my 98 TA I already had 3.73's which work well with the A4 already and even better with the cam. I'm running a 3200 Circle D stall but a 3400 or 3600 would be a better fit if you wanna race it to take full advantage for my use the 3200 is good and very good street manners even with the 113 LSA as opposed to a 114 which was my original choice but my friend had this for his Vette and didn't need it so I got a good deal. car pulls much better mid and high end now and have it set to shift at 6500 or so. When the tuning is done i am going to dyno it just to see the difference from before. I also have a LS6 intake from a 02 TA, and full bolt ons. While I did the cam I also installed a ported oil pump and double roller timing chain and used the patriot gould dual spring kit. car runs great I would definately recommend it. Not sure if it has 400hp but it was at 340 on a dyno jet before so we'll see after the tuning is done what it comes out at. More curious of what it will run at the track since i never got to take it yet so this will be it's 1st trip when the tuning is done and the sfc's finally go in.

Thanx team! A lot of great input here! Originally, I was thinking anything above a 3200 stall would be too much but I guess going w/a 36-3800 and matched cam would really wake the car up
I am mapping out my plans but basically building her w/a gear vendors overdrive to take her on the twisties for some roadcourse racing. I know an auto for the track might not be the MOST popular but if I build her right, I might have a decent street (non-drag)/roadracing machine.

a 224/224 on 114 is the largest you can go and still pass smog. A cam that will make 400rwhp wont be one that will work well with your stock converter.
If you are not worried about passing smog and keeping your stock converter i would suggest a 228/232 on 112+2 as long as you have longtube headers. I would hesitate to go any bigger then that.

I run a ms4 in my m6,I love the ms4,but I'm setting my car up to run that cam,it doesn't do to bad on the stock gears but I will be going with 4.30 gears or higher in the new rear,I'm also gonna run some spray next year,I know bigger isn't always better but a ms3 with the right stall, gears, and spray will make some pretty good times at the track, there are a lot of good cams out there but I couldn't see to many pulling up top the way the ms4 does, from a 40 roll that thing pulls pretty hard, its all in making your set up work, the bigger cams have gotten a bad rap here and I think that's because guys just throw in a big cam and that's all,but you do all the supporting mods to a ms3 or 4 and it will be a pretty tough car to beat,

My setup for next year,
Arp rod bolt,12 bolt with 4.30s or 4.56 ,stage 2 t56 rebuild, prc 227 heads, ported fast 90,this is just to give ya a lil idea of supporting mods, also you'll gonna wanna get a lil bigger injectors,my stock ones were at 97% at 6300 ,also ls7 lifters wouldn't be a bad idea when you do the heads, but your car with a good stall and gears with a ms3 will run good all these other mods are just gonna make the most out it,good luck
