Default Reinstalling engine in car, heads on or off?

I had some issues with my car so I had to take the engine out. A friend suggested that I should have the engine builder install my heads since it would be pretty easy for him as well as having the additional experience.

I was wondering if it is significantly harder to reinstall the engine with the heads on rather than off? They were off when I pulled my motor.

By the way, I replaced my hammer cam with the LG GX5-3 cam on a 112. I already had MTI stage II LS6 heads. I'm dying to find out how the car does. Locally, it doesn't seem like the bigger cammed cars have faired too well. Hope I won't be one of them. I am concerned about the drivability?

Thanks

When i pulled my motor i pulled it out the top with the heads off. I know it can be done with the heads on, but i left my hood on and took my heads off. Im putting it back in this weekend, and i think im going to try to stab it with the tranny bolted up, and heads off.

If you have access to a lift, or can perhaps buy some lift time from some place that is the way to go.

You can un-bolt the K-Member and lift the car right off leaving the K-member sitting on a roll cart or something like that.

From there just place the engine on the k-member then lower the car back down onto the K-member. Simple stuff

Thanks for the help. Seems like removing the k-member would make a lot of things easier. But not sure about lifting the whole car thing w/out a regular car lift.

Just leave off the intake and crank pully . It'll go right in .

I've dropped a K-member with jackstands (w/o lift)....3 Words....DON'T DO IT

Slide it in from the top. It'll slide in/out with the heads on, but having them off definately makes it easier. If you don't have the radiator or anything in the car, installing heads w/ the motor in the car is fairly easy. Just plop down on the radiator support, slip your heads on, and wrench away. No biggie..

put the tranny on also, it will fit if you dont have the crank pully on and have a small chain, and it really helps, make sure you have your motor mounts on the right way, i didnt and it took an extra 30 min to re-do it. but i loved the tranny fittin in also, i have pics of it going in, and you dont have to take the hood off!!! but another person is needed (obviously)

It will fit with the crank pully on , but , IMO it's easier with it off .

I've done many pulls, installs, and I always leave the heads on, tranny bolted up and the crank pulley still on. It all fits, you just have to make small moves, and a second person helps (although it's not needed) The key is to get the chain as short as possible , and I stick a long bolt infront and behind the hook on the cherry picker in the chain links to keep it from slipping.....

I think it is rather easy to do it from the bottom with jack stands. I do use a good set of jacks and heavy duty stands. I would never do the heads in the car if I could do them on the engine stand. It is much easier and quicker out of the car.
