Default lifter trays?!?!

i've been thinking... is it possible that a cam can be too big for the lifter treys? wont it eventually hit the trays. can someone explain this to me?

A cam that big won't fit thru the cam bearings.

While it won't hit the tray due to lobe height, the lower base circle of the cam required for higher lift does allow the lifter to run lower in the tray. There have been some who have speculated this can cause oil starvation and it is one of the reasons that the Morel lifters are slightly taller.

vettenuts is correct. The lifter never travels higher than it did from the factory, but it will travel further down the lifter bore with aftermarket cams.

OP, got any pics of your Vette under the hood? I'd like to see how the LS1 looks in a mid 70's Vette.

Are you sure about that?

**EDIT**-Just looked at a stock cam in the garage and I think you're right. There really isn't a lot of room to play with there.

If you increase the lobe height it will be taller than the journal diameter and will not pass thru the cam bearings. All aftermarket cams have material removed from the basecircle and require an increase in pushrod length to achieve more lift. The most common example of this is the LS6 cam that has an 0.050" reduction in base circle and 0.050" increase in valve lift.

I see that you have figured this out by looking at a cam, but elaborated on it for others that may question whether or not this is true.
