Default Detonation questions, or just plain failure

Ok,

ive been curious since my stock ls1 broke on me.

Generally speaking when ive seen evidence of Detonation on pistons, you can actually see scaring, or pits or chucks of the piston missing.

Im a bit curious, what are the main causes of ringland failure.

The #5 ringland is what broke in my old ls1, and the aside from that, the pistons looked immaculate, not pits, or scaring of anykind at all.

Just a crushed ringland.

SO i ask, what are the causes of a broken ringland??

EDIT: i might also add, when the failure occcured, the logs showed ZERO knock, IATS were fine, and fueling was ok, maybe 11.8 or 12.0 but i was running E85, and hit 14lbs of boost on the run that broke the motor.

I have seen the same thing on stock pistons. I think it just exceeds the limit of the strength in the part.
