Default Ported 853's vs 241's

Hi guys,
Forgive me as I am sure this has been covered before, but here in Australia we didn't get many LS1's with 853 cast heads.

I have an LS1 with a 220/220 @ 112 cam and all bolt ons, and it has stock 241 heads. It has made 390+ rwhp on a few dynos, and so far I have run 12.2@114.6mph. The car is a manual.

My question is I am looking at heads, and as I am on a budget, I have found some hand ported, 5 angle valve job 853's with larger stainless valves (2.02 and 1.57) with Patriot Extreme springs, and they will be milled 30 thou.

I know ported 243's would be better. But due to my budget how much of a gain do you think these will be over my stock 241's?

Ive been looking at this too. I have come to the conclusion that buy a pair of 243s would be a better bang for the buck than sending my ls1 heads in for port work.

243s/$400-$500/ 20 or so rwhp
ported 241/853/$900 (cheapest Ive seen)/ 40 or so rwhp

As for the heads you are looking at, how much are they and who ported them? You should get them flowed before you buy them if the porting source is unknown.

241's and 853's are limited in how much you can port them and how much they will flow. will you see a gain from those ported 853's? yes you will. but you would see a better gain from 243's with the same work done. my advice is to work on that budget a little more and go with the better castings. (799's can also be had for cheap as well)

I say get a set of 799 or 243 to go on the car for now. Then down the line get those heads ported. Now if the 853 are at a price then get those if you don't want to get the 243 or 799 heads. It's really up to you.

The heads are done by AES, and the price is better than I can get the same work done on my 241 heads here in Aus even after importing them.
