Default I need a Cam for 02 Z06

I have a 02 Z06. I joined the forum because you guys "are" the best with the LS cams. I'm a 10 year member of the Corvette Forum and those guys over there always give you guys the Kudos. I've searched and read a lot of threads so I wanted to go ahead and post to get started. I just sold a 72 Camaro that had a 383 Stroker with a fairly radical cam. It ran and sounded great but I loss some drivability. On the Z06 I have the Halltech Venom and a set of JBX shortie headers and Borla Stingers. Car runs good and sounds great but I just can't get the Hot Rodder out of myself. I need a nice lope to give me that warm fuzzy feeling but I want to keep drivability in traffic. I know that the stock 02 LS6 cam is a fair cam itself but I need a little more.

If you are looking for a cam with good driveability and a noticeable lope I would recommend the 228R on a 112 LSA. This cam has an extremely broad powerband and in a vehicle like a z06 it should drive very niceley once tuned.

However I would recommend putting some longtube headers on the car. With the shorties on there you will not see the advertised horsepower pickup on the cam.

Long tubes are on the list. It's too bad that I had the drop 5k on new clutch and trans just a couple of months ago.

looks like you got the best advice from the start with John up there.

If your in a place where emissions arent an issue get some long tubes and let that motor breatheeeeeeeee.

something in the high 22X to low 23X is what your looking at for ballpar size. You might also wanna hit up PatG and have something custom spec'ed for you... maybe something that will work a little better with the shorties like Thunders CheaTR stuff

The only reason I installed the shorties was because I knew that the clutch/trans change out had to be done. That was the first time I paid someone to work on one of my cars and I didn't want to impact that job, and I only paid $100 for them. I don't want to size the cam for the shorties, LT are coming.

Some other ideas

Baby EPS cam lays down 430RWHP...
222/226 115LSA

403RWHP with 243's and stock exhaust manifolds
218/230 .595"/.600" 115LSA +4

440HP cam / FAST intake Z06
222/234 .596/.601 115lsa+3

Not exactly trying to be a cheerleader for EPS, but they do have good lobes and there aren't hardly any cams discussed recently with similar durations, and these all were LS6's or LS1's with stock 243 heads. Real point is that getting the cam is not the same as ordering french fries at McDonald's. Duration at .050 is only one part of the equation. How high do you want to rev the motor? Where do you want peak power? How often do you drive the car on the street versus track? Does it see the drag strip or the road course? How often do you want to replace valve springs?

Getting the valve events right on a nice lobe is better than just picking a duration because one of us said not to go any smaller. That is to say you might find that a few less degrees of duration puts your IVC in a little better spot and allows you to limit token advance (because you didn't go overboard with duration)... and also allows you to run a tighter LSA with the same overlap, which will lengthen the power stroke and potentially keep your overlap centered to TDC or towards the intake. All in all making similar peak power with potentially better throttle response, drivability, and average power.

The PatG torque cam thread might be interesting for you to read too, although he had AFR heads so just keep that in mind... although they do discuss it theoretically on stock style heads in there:
Torque coming out of my ears
224/228 .637/.639 110LSA (+0)

I would go with something from 224 to the low 230's range. For the best advice talk to PatG or PredatorZ. I would also add a good set of heads to the list when you have the funds, and if you plan to do that at some point you should take that into consideration when picking the cam.

My Z is my weekend and run around town car. It will never see the track, will probally not see redline very much. It does see 5G or maybe 55 but that's it. I just want plenty of torque a great sound and a lope.

Well in that case, 224 or 228 with a tight LSA and some good tuning. It will still pull to 6500+ if you ever want it to.

I would honestly suggest a TR228, TR230, 228R, or one of Cam Motion's 228/232 grinds.

i'll give you my 224r if you give me your vette

haha. but seriously can't go wrong with the 224r or 228r on a street car. it'll give you a little chop and a lot of torque and tip in. especially if you ever end up bumping compression.
