Default Mobil 1 oil questions (looking for more technical answers)

I know there are a lot of threads on oils. I have been searching most of the morning trying to find some results. I have been running 0w40 in my car for some time now. I was looking for oil analysis results on the 0w40 vs 5w40 and more technical explanations of each (if there are any advantages of one over the other).

I may drive my car 1000-2000 miles per year. I can get the 5w40 oil at Walmart quite a bit cheaper since it comes in 4 qt containers and some threads seem to hint around the 5w40 may be better. I was thinking the 5w40 may be better suited for higher temps, but that may be a bad assumption. I have run the GC 0w30 in my car and was not too happy with the increase in oil consumption, I was not seeing this with the 0w40. The car may sit for a month or two as well, not sure if one may be better than another in this type of service.

Can anyone help (some links?) with some information on which of the two oils has better results?

I can add 2 things to this thread:

-FYI, the oil you buy from Walmart is not the same quality grade
-Send "Patman" a PM on this forum. He did extensive oil testing/analysis for years trying to find the best oils. Not sure how much he frequents the forum anymore but the infamous oil analysis threads were all made by him.

I just read that as well, interesting. Then that takes the price out of it (wish Advance would put another 5 qts + filter for $30 out there).

Thanks

I agree with Josh here. I started putting Supertech in all my cars. Well after a while I started getting top-end noise and lifters chattering on multiple vehicles I have since gone to Pennzoil Platinum and everything is back to normal. As far as the viscosity, Im gonna stick with 5 or 10w/30 and thats it. I dont get too caught up in chasing weird viscosity numbers.

Yeah, I just want the best protection for the few miles I drive my car. Last oil change was 10/2009 and I have not driven the car in 2 months. I was just trying to get the information on the latest and greatest :

For what it's worth, I like running the 0w-40 M1. I have tried Castrol 10w-30 and Edge 5w-30. 0w-40 Seems to burn off less than the others. Mobil has supposedly done research where using 0w-40 in 5w-30 and 10w-30 spec'd cars causes no problems. My personal expereince supports this claim. I know I'm just one person, with one car, in the entire world. As I've mentioned in other threads before, 99% of people will do just fine with whatever synthetic is on sale at the store, with stock recommended grade.

Why would Walmart have different types of M1 oil vs. auto parts stores? That seems odd to me.

I am going to stick with the 0w40 unless I can find some definitive answers to make me change. I was just really curious is the 5w40 offered any better protection.

So what exactly was the difference? Mobil 1 claims on their website it's the same product as anywhere else. If someone could prove it was false advertisement......

I though Josh was referring to the Supertech (Walmart) brand of oil.

I think the confusion is some readers saw Walmart and assumed WS6Firebird was using the Walmart Supertech oil. I'm going to make the assumption that WS6Firebird is purchasing Mobil 1 from Walmart. In which case, it's exactly the same oil you buy from any parts store. I've purchased my Mobil 1 from Walmart in the past. You can save a few bucks from time to time.

Yes, Walmart is the only place around I can get M1 gallons. Saves about $10 over advance.

Not sure, but my Amsoil rep confirmed this. Also if you'll notice, the bottles of Mobil 1 sold in Walmart have a stamp on them that says something along the lines of "made for walmart"...

Why would they put that on the bottles if it was the same stuff? They wouldnt..

This holds true with a lot of other things too. The electronics, tools, tires (especially) and other products sold at Walmart are a different quality grade.

It's weird but Mobil 1 isn't the same any more. Walmart do get M1 syn cheaper then auto stores. That's so ******* weird its only 25 bucks for one gallon fully syn. Mobil 1 switched plants or something is what i heard last.

Just stick with purple royal and amsoil, they are the best.

Uh, do you know the ones I just picked up and have been getting for quite some time are 4 quarts? Way to bring up an old thread and then post inaccurate information. This is what ruins forums for me, people who make worthless posts.

parks450, thanks for the info, that is good news (if it saves $$). Advance just had their M1 oil special (5 qts and a filter for $32) not too bad. I guess I better tell crainholio that I know the car takes more than 5 qts before this thread gets brought up 2 months from now with a smart comment about that

well here in bama when you get to the checkout at walmart they will charge you a small oil disposal fee for every quart you buy, doesnt matter the size,so now ive had to factor that in when im looking for the best deal at the time,i havent asked but the other retailers dont charge it,maybe its included in the price already?
