Default Turbo LS1...when to spec custom cam or buy off shelf?

Good friend has a mostly stock LS1 with turbo running 5 psi and the car runs just awesome. He recently purchased a set of 317's which are at the machine shope being cleaned up and lightly ported but leaving valve size stock, and will be finishing the install of the meth kit here shortly and now in the market for a cam and curious when to go after something custom or buy something off the shelf?

Would love some opinions and any experience.

Most of the turbo cams we do are custom grind. This is mainly because the cams we stock don't have a split in duration and boost definately favors a larger exhaust duration. We have done some off the shelf boost cams for people in a hurry but we prefer to custom grind them.

Hi,
texas speed is correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!use a custom grind to get the most bang for the buck..these guys are a-1 and have a vast knowledge of the ls engines and many others. Do not sacrifice power for a few $$$$$$$$$$$. Good luck with your project and send them a email to gain more insight. Have a blessed day........jim

I am sure a shelf grind turbo cam profile would be fine. By looking at your application, nothing in your statement above looks to exotic imo to justify a custom cam.

Thanks for the imput guy's and will for sure give Texas Speed a call, we aren't in a hurry just wondering what justifies a custom application and want to sound educated before I make calls so I don't sound too much like a newb.

For that application a stock Z06 cam would be best.

Default Always ask questions

Hi,
knowledge gained is something you keep for life. I have tried things both ways on my son's car. Just make a list of what you want and then look at your actual needs for present and future. We run a turbo and have tried alot of different engine combos.the new engine is going to be an iron block with lower compression and more boost along with filling the water jackets. We often want more power/speed/lower et/ just do your research and everything will work out for you. Spend wisely to avoid duplication and cost overrun. Please remember your rear axles and gears along with suspension mods.have a blessed day.........jim
