Default what springs to use ? (part 2)

Ok...

TEA heads, machined for 987 springs

Putting big cam in... 987s not up to par (232/240 593/603 112 cam)

Can i put smaller diameter springs into the spring pockets that are machined for the larger? stock is 1.250 right? these pockets are machined to accomodate 1.430/1.460 springs... but there are a ton of good stock diameter springs out now!

Do I have any choices other than going to 977s? (aka need Comp Rs which I have but I don't have adjustable rockers....)

You have a PM...

Also, you can shim the stock rockers, or a direct replacement (YTs, HS, etc) so I'd not give up on that idea, yet. Comp 977s are great springs, several X2 and X3 cars running around on them with no probs.

You must run longer vavles to run the 977 spring. However with a modified spring locator you can run the 978 which is identical to the 977 except for the installed height is 1.800 instead of 1. 850. Remember to use comp "r's" with either spring.

I paid $35 extra for 978s on my TEA 1.5s and im using compRs. I just punched out .005 shims out of shim stock to get pre load right. BTW I gonna use the X1.

Yes, you can. The valvespring locator locates itself around the OD of the valveguide. You will have no problems running a smaller diameter spring with pockets cut for the larger springs. Just can't do it the the other way around.

Fine, but this advice had me waste several hundred $ on the crane set up when they didn't work due to the install height. I was told I could just put them in without shimming. After this, I had valve float at 6000 instead of 6400.

I didn't know that the 978's required the Comp R lifters. My heads came with the 978's and I'm running them on stock lifters. How much trouble am I in? Do I need to change lifters immediately?

Thanks

Yes,you can run a smaller spring in the larger pocket.Just mak sure you buy the spring lcator. The patriot "GOLD" spring kit comes with a hardened spring locator that will hold the spring in place. This will let you run a stock diameter spring in a larger pocket.

No, it is not mandatory to run Comp R lifters with the 978, too much misinformation, sorry for the confusion. The 978 will deliver around 410-420 lbs @ .600" lift, which should not cause a problem with the stock lifters.

BTW, the coil bind on the 978 is 1.090" , the coil bind on the 977 is 1.200", since there has to be a minimum of .050" from peak lift to coil bind, then the 977 would have to set up at 1.850", which is not possible with most LSx head setups.
