Default Driving with no tune?

Hey wussup guys I have a recently installed ms3 cam, ls6 intake, nitrous kit, 3.73 gears installed. The reason for me making this post is to see if it was ok to drive the car without a tune as long as I keep the rpm's under 3000 because I have new gears installed and I really didnt want to tune it on the dyno on new gears without the 500mile break in and mess something up. I had some 3.73's put in about 4 months ago and put about 180 miles on them and decided to race someone and as soon as I got done racing My rearend was making a howling noise so I got them replaced along with the cam and nitrous and ls6 install. So Im trying to figure out will it be ok to drive it without a tune for 500miles till I tune it or should i just go ahead and tune it and see where it gets me thanks guys.

Tune it. I would never drive 500 miles untuned,
Especially if you upgraded injectors

agreed.....its just not worth killing the motor. a few pulls should be fine on the rear

yea I was thinking the same thing especially with a cam that big may if it was a small one but not this one. I sure hope the rear gears hold up because I would hate to have to go in a 3rd time to get them redone. I would prob just put aside money for a moser but im hoping i will do fine the way it is now especially on the 125shot

maybe get a mail order tune by frost,he should get you pretty close .he probably has tuned for this cam before.is it 500 miles for gear break in?would using slicks lessen the strain on the gears?

alot of times the tuner will let you count their mail order tunes toward the dyno tune. my buddy got the mail order to drive his to the dyno. its usually a rich tune with mild timing. Id go that route for sure

Did you change your injectors or MAF?

Thanks. I understand that if you change injectors or the MAF that the car should not be driven without a tune. In fact, I recommend that those two things only be changed when the tuner is present or if the car is to be towed to the tuner.

Having said that, for other changes such as cams, heads, or headers I do not see why you cannot drive the car as long as: (a) you avoid full throttle; and (b) you get no error codes indicating either lean or rich conditions. It seems to me that the computer can adjust for some changes and will throw error codes for those changes that go outside of the range for which the computer can adjust. (The front O2 sensors must be in place.)

Changed injectors/MAF are exceptions because the computer is blind to those changes and its adjustments therefore don't stand a chance).

although I do agree with darkman, Unless you know exactly what to look for and whats going on, I just don't see it to be worth the risk. As for a mail order, I know PCM for less here in NC will let you buy a $225 mail order tune to drive on until you cant take it to the dyno, in which case the $225 counts toward the $400 total for the dyno. that makes the most sense to me.

Ok thanks alot guys from what im readin im not going to chance my motor. I'd rather have to go back into the rearend and have to change some gears out rather than rebuild a whole motor so i will just trailer it up to my tuner. Thanks alot guys
