Default Suggested Cam Specs for 425+ RWHP

I have a 2003 Corvette Z06 and plan to do a cam upgrade this spring. The current list of mods are as follows:
XS Power 1 3/4" Longtube headers with Cats and X-Pipe
West Coast Corvette Dual K&N Intake
ECS Mail Order Tune

So basically I am just looking for the cam specs that I would need to get me in the 425+ RWHP zone and also keep the drivability rather decent. I do plan to get the following "Ultimate Cam Package" and am just wanting the cam specs. Ultimate Cam Package I do plan to get a full dyno tune after the install and plan to keep the stock heads and intake.

A cam that makes that kind of power on stock heads will be on the larger side and will be a little sluggish in the low rpms. It really depends on your definition of "decent drivability" IMO pick up some ported heads and make a decent amount more power more efficiently and have more power under the curve

When I say "decent driveability" I mean if I was to drive it in traffic 3x a week I am not going to be dealing with massive cam surge and such. I understand heads will definitely make more power more effectively but at a much higher cost that I intend to possibly dive into next year. This year I am looking to just do the cam and see how I like it. Thanks for the input.

How do you guys with experience feel about the G5x1 and G5x2 cams - they both seem to be a pretty decent "tam-ish" grind that makes good power. Ls6 heads definitely are not as disadvantaged as some of the other stock castings, its not a stretch to think 425rwhp cam only would come at too much of a driveability cost is it?

And on another note, I was also looking at the whiplashII offsite with the original poster - they advertise 450rwhp on cam only with good manners - that seems like a stretch though. Thoughts?

I dont have experience with either of those cams. I just know that my cam is 232/234 .595 .598 112lsa and it has a good amount of chop at idle, behaves nicely while cruising, even with stock gears. BUT the stock gears also make it feel sluggish in the lower rpms. and I know for a fact that cam only you can't make 425 with it. Surging and bucking are mostly products of the tune. A good dyno tune will erase those problems. It just comes down to the fact that if you want big power on stock heads you will have a larger cam and it will have a peaky power band. and that will be made worse by stock rear gears. So you can make the 425rwhp you want, but it may be no fun to drive.

Dyno numbers will depend on weather you are on a mustang dyno or dynojet. MY $.02, dont chase a number, pick a cam that has a good broad torque curve and makes nice even power. the car will likely be quicker everywhere but on the dragstrip and more fun to drive.

Go with a some Comp LSL lobes, the ramp rates are a little less aggressive than XE-R lobes.

Maybe a 231/231 111 lsa (231 lobe # 13018, lift .617").
Or if you want a little more exh. a 235 lobe #13019, lift .621".
If this is to much lift use a XFI lobe (236 lobe #3037, lift .607")

If you don't want heads you can port your stock ones. A cam in the 230ish range is what your looking for. Drivability will be all in the tune.

Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BL3WYeUcZM, and the op has headers already so he should be at 397rwhp. With a not so big cam, 425rwhp is right around the corner.

Here's another one with a cam and headers, 421rwhp, and 390tq

eps 222/226 will make around 425whp with your setup and retain near stock driveability.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...k-results.html

same engine you got only difference is he is a stalled a4 and it still layed down 430whp!!

There's also a 6speed version of that same cam with ported 5.3 heads in the dyno section right now that made 428whp so look for repeatability.

I understand that but dyno numbers dont mean much to me... the fact that the car in the link I posted trapped in the 12x's tells me the numbers are legit! Not to mention that is not a ls6 engine in that car your talking about...maybe the valvetrain is heavier eating up some hp in that setup....

That is so much BS it makes me wanna

Just because you read something does not make it true even if we want to believe it.... RUN from anything EG IMO..... That dude was an accountant up until he started his shop and is a marketer not a cam designer or even a tech

maybe maybe not, there are also well tuned cars with more duration and more aggressive lobes that dont make that power all else being the same.

I would just shoot for a cam that fits your criteria in terms of drivablity and how you want the power delievey and not worry about what the dyno says. In this case a 233/239 on 113 would work well i believe.

Anyone who thinks it takes a 230 plus duration cam to make 425hp in a C5 with 243 heads needs to ship me what they are smoking. A 224/228 588./595. 114 lsa will make 400+ plus at the rear wheels all day long. Go with a 228/228 and I'm almost willing to bet money that you make your goal. EPS cams have also been showing great promise lately with short durations and strong midrange and top end with cams that would normally take 10+ degrees more duration to make the same numbers

^^Yeah, lots of incorrect statements in that post and an incorrect attitude in general IMO. First of all, every dyno is different everyday of the week, not to mention brands are notorious for showing different hp. Operator correction factors, and/or built in correction factors, the list goes on and on.......And to say EPS cams are equal to cams sporting ten more degrees of duration is cheerleader.
