Default No/Low Oil Pressure and Knocking

Looking for some help, I have been trying to sell my camaro for a few months now and I found a buyer. He was going to come pick up the car Saturday so I wanted to get the car started and make sure everything was still running well.

The car hasbeen sitting for the last month so I jumped it and filled up the tires. The car fired right up and I let it idle for a bit. I took it out on the road and I got on the highway and noticed a faint clanking. A few minutes later I looked down and saw my oil pressure gauge was low. It was around 20/30, so I got off the one exit to head home and I noticed the oil pressure dropped to zero. I got home and at idle the car has 0 oil pressure and it does not seem to go above 20. If I give it a small rev there is a metal knocking, sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the block. I obviously did not want to rev it but I had it up around 2500k and the metal noise continues.

I am not really sure what happened, I have only driven the car 100-200 miles since August and I do not beat on my car. Now I do not know if I want to sell it as is or just park it, figure it out and fix it.

Any ideas on what it could be, are my bearings bad or something? I am not too good with internal stuff so I wanted to post up for suggestions.

Well if it's already knocking it sounds like the damage has already been done. The knocking sound is most likely caused from a spun rod bearing, which is prob not what you want to hear.

First thing you will want to do is drain the oil and have a look at the drain plug. If there is alot of metal on it. Then this confirms my theory above.

That's weird that the knocking started after it sat for a while. I wonder if there is a correlation or if it's 100% chance?

OP, how many miles on the car/engine?

97800, I am not exaggerating when I say I never beat on the car. I've dumped the clutch a few times under 3000 rpm, I cant remember the last time I've hit redline. I've never been to the track, although I cant speak for previous owners.

Maybe your pump was failing and the low oil pressure over time did it. Who knows?

Even though it sucks, I am personally glad it happened to me and not a month after someone purchased it. I had a buyer lined up for Saturday and everything, awful timing lol. The knocking is not too bad yet, its clearly there but more so at lower rpms.

Spun a bearing on my old LT1. Tore it apart and was going to fix it. Ended up selling it and losing a lot of money cause it was in pieces. If your going to sell it, leave it in 1 piece and don't mess with anything. I wouldn't run it more then you have to either. Good luck either way you go.

Thanks, I think that is going to be my plan. I had considered tearing it down, which would not take me that long but it would probably end up sitting around 2 years before I had the funds to fix it the way I wanted to.

Well drain the oil and see if there is metal. Hell it could be a push rod or something but with it having low oil pressure I doubt it though. It's really not an expensive fix, it's just really time consuming.

It could be a bad lifter since they need oil pressure to pump them up to the correct length.

Diffently sounds like your oil pump is abot to go. But yes, could be just a lifter since it lost psi and now want prime just want prime back up since you have oil psi. Have seen it before. Although if you can hear the noise on both sides at the bottom or seems like the rear, its a bearing. sorry
