Angry Rear Main Seal Leak

So apparently my Trans am developed a rear main seal leak. Its not pouring fluid, but there is a good golf ball size puddle of oil underneath of it every morning or so. The estimate from the shop was pretty steep (800$) for what seems like a simple fix (the hardest part actually getting to the seal itself).
I'm looking into buying some of this to see if it will curb the leak. Has anyone has anyone had any success with this stuff?http://directory.fleetmag.com/produc...in_Seal_Repair

Should I attempt to pull out the transmission, etc, to repair it myself?

You can give up on any additive working I aint never heard of one that would stop a main seal leak. As far as should you tackle this yourself only you know that. its not that bad and once the trans is out its a heck of alot easier than the rear main rope seal in your 455. it can be done without the specialty tools, do a search I have a long post helping a fella with this .

I had one that was leaking due to the rear plate having loose bolts in it. When I was replacing my clutch I tightened them and it stopped leaking. Just a thing to try

Thanks for the info guys, I guess ill start with the cheaper way and change the oil and put leak additive in it, and check surrounding bolts. If not, I guess Ill attempt to do it myself.

You might check your PCV system and make sure it's working. These engines are so tight that a plugged PCV will make the crankcase vent somewhere else, usually the rear main seal. Clean everything up and try driving a few days with the oil fill cap off. If it quits leaking, fix the PCV...

I would say do it yourself instead of paying for the install. Not a bad time to do the clutch if yours needs it. I think the seal is maybe $15 from the dealer. And with the install money you saved you could swap in a new LS7 clutch with an aluminum flywheel:

And it's a good idea to swap the slave too:

You can even buy this jack from HF and still come in under $800 (this works good pulling the 10 bolt as well):

I recently did a clutch/fly install in addition to a rear main seal change. It's not too bad, a little time consuming just because there is a lot of torque sequence and "here and theres" that need to be covered. I definitely would say you can tackle this yourself at home with some jack stands. I actually had a little difficulty pulling the rear main seal out, theres really nothing to pry against to get it out of its home. Just a warning...

Also, the tranny jack listed above from HF is EXCELLENT. I bought that for my clutch install and it made it 100 times easier, not to mention it keeps ATF from leaking all over you. Good luck.

I hate to be a stickler for details....but, you do have 3 TAs in your sig. Exactly which one are you referring to?
