5.3 cam bearing replacement
Anyone have any tips on changing cam bearings on my 5.3?
I have the motor on the engine stand and tore down to a short block. I was going to install a new cam and when I pulled the old one out I found the bearings worn. The cam looks excellent but at least the front and rear bearings are showing half copper.
I've read this bearings are sized different between the journals.
Can I use a regular cam bearing tool or is it a different tool?

The tool should contract and expand atleast if you have the right one. Replace them and put the cam back in be very careful with the first one you see that one can be tricky to seat right. If the cam doesn't feel right after you install new ones its not right. Take your time and its not rocket science.

I would like to know too, I'm about to do the same thing to my 5.3L. I was pulling the cam out and everything was going smoothly then I hear jingling...the bearing fell out.

when you get the new bearings they should be in order in the box,it will say on the box what the order is, make sure you put them in the proper journal because some of them are different sizes...
also make sure you get the oil hole on the bearing in line with the oil hole in the journal. if you fail to do this you will starve the bearing of oil which obviously leads to destruction. try not to touch the inside of the new bearing with bare fingers as the oil from your fingers collects dirt.. just a pointer i have been told hope it helps.good luck
