Default Advice ON A Low Mileage Engine That Has Sat 6 Years

One of the engine I am currently looking at for my build is an L33 with 4,000 miles for a grand. The only downside is that it has been removed and not operated since 2005. However it tested fine and I believe it was turned over before being put to rest. The price is good but I am concerned about the engine internals and cylinder wall rust => REBUILD. What would be the possible negatives of this engine? Is it something deserving of a gamble?

If it has been pulled see if they will let you yank a head and have a look......

Yes, if you can pull the head, and look at the walls and make sure they are not rusted up, and look at the oil in it, that will let you know if its been exposed to alot of moisture,, If the plugs are not in it, I would steer clear of it, same as if the pan or intake is off of it.

I just received an email saying that they would include a 90 day warranty. Is a salvage yard warranty worth anything or is more trouble then it is worth when you try to use it?

Most salvage yards will give you a replacement engine when you return one under their warranty.

Usually you can get away with just pulling the spark plugs and shining a flashlight down in the hole to get a decent look down in the cylinders to see if they are rusting up. That should keep you from having to pull the head gaskets and getting into having to replace gaskets. Take a breaker bar and socket to spin the engine over so you can get the pistons out of the way to look at the cylinders and bring them up close to TDC and see if you can see any rust forming on top ring. If the rust is going to be anywhere heavy it will be on the top ring because it will catch and seal in any water that has gotten into the cylinder.

I say go for it! Sounds like a killer deal with only 4K miles on the clock!

Rent BEG or Borrow a mechanics camera(Snap On etc), they are around 200 bucks or so. You can then pull a few plugs and get a good look without pulling a head off.

What is all included? Intake to oil pan or just the bare longblock?

Ok, bringing life to thread because I now have a related topic. I ended of getting a deal on gto ls2 pullout. I am wanting to start her up this weekend. The engine has probably been down now for a couple years. Is it a good idea to go with a conventional (non-synthetic) oil on startup? I have come across comments relating to reseating the piston rings. Is this good practice or am I over thinking the situation. Just build oil pressure and then start. As the season is nearly done i just want to get her started to see if all the hard work has paid off and whether clutch/tranny are sorted. I won't be taking it on the road but I can heat cycle the engine a few times. I would appreciate some advice.

Remve and soak the injectors in diesel or keresene to ensure they are not all gummed up with old gas varnish. They can get stuck open and leak at idle or never open and prevent starting or very rough idle. You amy think you have a bad engnie but in aact it is ok. Happened to 4 engines I have swap'd.
