Default drill holes in lifter trays or not?

i am rebuilding a 98 ls1. in reading several books about this one of them says to drill half inch holes in the lifter trays for better oil drain. is this a good idea and if it is where should they be drilled? thanks for your help.

The need to drill holes comes when you do sustained high rpm running like in road racing with long straights. Fact is though, if that's your intention, then you should be running a dry sump system as well.

Once the tray fills, it spills over the top. In my mind, why weaken the tray.

I drilled mine and put LS2 trays in also. And the LS2 trays are just stronger and built better like always.

As noted, LS2 tray; although, if road course driving or sustained high rpm driving a lot, drill the trays, 3/8" on the low side or side nearest you when standing next to either side of the engine. Drill just above the strengthening ribs, (2) holes per tray. What this does, is to allow oil to drain back to the pan sooner than it would having filled the whole tray before over flowing. Dry sumps aren't always effective for road course driving. Even vettes running dry sumps have had oil starvation engine failures.

I run my LS1's w/ drilled lifter trays, oil pans (wet sumps) & pre-oilers on road courses while sustaining 1.8-2.1g long sweeping turns.

i just got the LS2 lifter trays, through them in and called it a day, no reason for me to drill them. it is your engine so your choice.
