Default Rebuilding engine. New rings, honing question.

Hello.

I just bought the following for my LQ4, stock bore, stock pistons.

Mahle Motorsport 4.000" + .005" plasma moly ring set 1.5/1.5/3.0

What exactly will I need to do to make sure everything fits perfectly.

When I ordered them from Speed Inc. The guy said that a hone is necessary, I know a hone is needed for the new rings to seat. But Is one needed for the new rings to fit.

Also whats the best way to check my ring gap? This is what i have found for gap clearance, 0.02-0.03 in.

Thanks in advance.

My new rings will be in later today, so I need some quick responses.

Thanks again.

Tyler

Why did you buy +.005" rings? Even if you honed enough for them to fit, the stock piston skirt clearance would be too great & would cause piston slap @ the very least. Send the rings back for a stock bore set, hone lightly for ring break in & be done w/ it. If you want the +.005" rings, get +.005" pistons, if they exist, so that the assembly tolerances are correct.

+ .005 rings are the norm when it comes to a file fit set.Do a quick hone, set the gaps for application.

^^^

It's all good, he posted that because they are file fit; meaning that they will work after filing to fit. I agree, if file fit, then they will work once fitted. Didn't think about them being file fit as it was not listed in your original post.

Alright cool.

Yea, this is my first big project. So I have allot of questions.

I have about $8500 in my project now, with another $2500 to spend.

He didn't ask if he should have it professionaly assembled and blueprinted. He clearly wants to do it himself.

Well he can do it himself, just have the rings file fit for the block and each separate piston. The machinist will number the pistons and rings for which hole they go in.

if you are file fitting your own rings use the piston upside down to place the rings square in the cylinder bore.make sure to debur the ring ends good so not to leave scratches on the cylinder wall.do you have the proper files and feeler gauges?you have removed the rods from the crank ,you need to resize the big end .you mite need to balance it.
