Default Got my first LS1, should I mod it?

Been an LT1 guy for a long time, now its time to get into the LS1 game. I bought a 5,400 mile 2000 LS1 and T56 combo today. The guy i bought it from pulled one of the heads off to start porting it. Never got around to it and just put it back on and tightend a couple bolts, thats when I bought it.
My question is since it needs at least one new head gasket, should i replace the other one as well. If i do that, since the heads are off, should i have them ported, gasket matched? If I go that far should i just throw a cam in it too?
I guess my main question is should i start modding it with such low miles? Thanks!

why not? its not a 02 ws6 with 5400 miles on it its just the motor and trans. if it was me id put some 243 heads ls6 intake on it along with a cam and go ahead and change the rod bolts. better to do now than when its in the car. oh yea clutch factory ones are crap if in not mistaken (i have an a4 so not sure)

asking if you should mod an ls1 is like being in bed with a really hot chick and asking if you should bang her? Hell yeah you should!

I'm pretty sure you'd be ok with 5,600 miles. It's past the initial break-in point which is a good thing, so yeah, I'd jump right in and begin the process. I personally probably would go ahead and get the heads ported, but I don't think I would spin the extra money on a cam at this point and time. After getting the heads ported, I would just follow up with the simple stuff to go along with the porting so that you can maximize the gains you would get once you do get that cam swap.

Just put the rest of your money into the usual bolt-on's, gears, subframe connectors, etc., then once that's said and done, I would begin to work your way into modifying it a little more internally. Just my opinion.

change the heads, put in a cam and give the 2010 a run for his money.....that is if you have the cash.

what car is this going in? what are your goals for this engine/car? i wouldn't mod **** if you're only looking to go 110 mph or so. what to do depends on what you want.

if its not in a car now's the easiest and best time to do it, can match port the heads and put a decent cam in, doesn't have to be anything to major unless you want to get something big, get something to match the heads and an exhaust to suit, put a double roller chain in, for a bit of durability, maybe port the factory oil pump, put an underdrive pulley on and will be a sweet ride no matter what it goes in, every one's different but that's what id do before it goes in.

just go ahead and port and mill the heads. doesn't cost that much and you will see a nice gain. even if that's the only(or one of the only) mods you do.

but if you could afford it, then i wouldn't hesitate to do LT's, cam kit, oil pump, ls6 pcv. you'll be glad you did now once the motor is in the car.

Mod It now, much easier then when it's in the car. here's what I'd do...
Heads, cam, and all the supporting mods, and chage the rod bolts for safety.
Either way ya go, you have to atleast change the head gasket and head bolts, since factory head bolts are torque to yield (one time use). Upgrade to ARP, since you can re-use them.

Yeah i'm thinking about just modding it now while everything is out. I ended up paying a decent amount of money for it so it doesnt leave me with a whole lotta coin left. What would be a more cost efficient heads cam swap then?

Errr....a bolt on only LS1 can do that. Those cars weigh almost 1,000 pounds more and have the aerodynamics of a brick. How I know? I have done it, with my heavy *** 19" wheels included.

If in doubt a bolt on and a good NOS shot will put that spanking for sure. Of course I'm talking about a STOCK 2010, please don't talk to me about modded ones.

I have personally taken down a couple stock 2010 camaro's and a 2011 5.0 with my bolt on car. Makes for a good race though.

ive destroyed some stock 2010's. but make no mistake once they start modding. that gap starts to close real quick.
