Default Oil pressure went up?

just had a hotcam kit installed with asp pulleys... all other mods in sig was already installed previously... after the cam went in the oil pressure gauge is showing just under the line between the 40 and 80 at idle thats after a drive at normal operating temps... what the deal here? car only has 22k on the meter

Thanks

ummm.....I would almost say thats a bad thing. For the pressure to rise, you have to either:

a) increase oil flow from the pump (which you didn't do)
or
b) you have backpressure past the gauge sending unit and the pump is having to force the oil through

the reason why i asked this is because after the shop installed the setup he asked me what my oil pressure was normally at.. and to be honest i never really paid attention to it before because i never did anything to the internals so was never worried and/or paid attention to it before... so he got me all worried now if i have a problem with it.

Usually oil pressure is slightly below to slightly above 40psi (usually ranges from 38-42psi). 60psi is the pressure at which the pumps bypass spring opens and does not send any extra oil to the engine. It is possible that you have a restriction somewhere in the system (after the sending unit). If this is so, you could be risking engine damage if its not checked. I would tell them that the stock pressure at idle is 40psi and to find out why its so high.

but how did it get restricted if we dint touch or change out the stock oil pump just a basic cam install

the only thing i know that could have done anything was when he lubed up the new cam with some REDLINE grease before inserting it...

The restriction would have to be inside the block (not the oil pump or oil filter) as the sensor is AFTER the oil filter. Its possible that the grease pluged up a passage and needs to work its way out (though that usually happens pretty quick). Its also possible (though it would take thick oil) that the oil was cold and was thus overly thick (higher pressure). Another possibility is that something got dinged and an oil passage is blocked. Did he let the engine come up to operating temp or did he just fire it up, look at the gauge, and then turn it off?

Another possibility (gulp) is something got into a passage during the cam swap. Was the oil and filter changed as a part of the upgrade?

it wasnt changed during the swap but thats the same way he has been doing it over and over... he has done it so many times he dint even use a rod or anything to hold up the lifters and he dint even rush...

where is the sensor maybe ill pull that off and check the sensor...

ok im sure we dint go back there during the install so i guess ill leave that alone for now lol

just got home from driving all around... idling the pressure shows under the 60 but i would say high 50's as per the factory gauge
