Default questions for building up a 98 ls1 for drifting

So I read most of the stickys and search a bunch got a lot of usefull info. This fourm is a huge help. I still have a few questions thow. So building a ls1 to go in my drift car and I got a few questions maken a list of parts to build..
Starting from bottom up.. original thought was all aluminum internals for the bottom end for hi rev but just day dreaming. I was thinking about a good bore pistons and rods with a ls6 ported head(would it make big diffrence over a ported ls1 head) cam and some basic head internals.. some one had reccomended katech stuff so I looked up there cams and head package and seeing how a ls6 stuff should go right on with a little maching work seemed like a good setup but it all depends on the machine shop I guess to see what best results. I keep getting diffrent recommendations for cam and rocker. Gm hot cam kit is supposed to be a good bang for u bug. Any help is welcomed please throw down your ideas I'm trying to make a good list so I can start getting everything to gether I'm looking for the best bang for ur buck kind of stuff... I'm gonna spend like 6 granf probally but the more $$$ I can save really helps my build...
thanks guys

edit(5/28/2011) - anyone got anyideas where i can get rotating assemblies for ls1 bottom end best bang for the buck???

Since max Hp is not really necessary for a drift application. IMO you should look into a gen4 4.8 equipped with 243/799 heads. These engines came with these heads stock
Also the 5.3 version also came with these heads stock. These engines are found in 05+ vehicles. And are usually very cheep. Compared to other LSX engines. Alredy come with the newer versions of the 243 heads. All u really need is a custom grind, Udp, headers, ls6 intake and a proper tune. Etc.

Guessing from the title you already have a 98 model LS1. From a reliability standpoint Katech rod bolts, a ported LS6 oil pump, and a LS2 timing chain should eliminate possible weak links. Contact PAT G for a cam/valvetrain that will go well with drifting duties.

yes i believe it is more popular in Florida and mostly in California
Bay Area - Infinieon Raceway(Sears Point) has wednesday night drags and sonoma drift every wednesday...
Theres also 2 pro am series in CA and formula D nation wide
Thunder hill has a drift pad just for this!!

correct on the 98 ls1 i have it sitting in my garage just tore it apart for the rebuild. seems to had high mileage from the wear signs on the cylinder walls.
- question do you know the difference or recommend which is better arp rod bolts and head studs or katech rod bolts and head studs?-
as of the ls6 ported oil pump(is that the cheapest way to do it) is there a link to a site that has that or is it a browse see how its done and do it your self? or aftermarket one that would serve well? As for the ls2 timing chain specific reason that one i am assuming the ls1 timing chain is not as strong so that you again for that but is there a better one to go with as well?
Also how do i get a hold of Pat G lol

as SuperSport01 had cought i lready picked up a ls1 and the heads i am looking at getting are these
http://store.katechengines.com/ls6-c...e-ii-p100.aspx
they are stage 2 cnc ported 243 heads.. Ls6 intake aswell was on the list.. only im not sure of yet is the cam... headers i already have some one on it for building them.
how ever im thinking if it would be more beneficial ($$$ wise) to just get my ls1 heads ported with all new head internals and just get a cam for my setup..

keep the ideas coming guys thanks a lot for the input its much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

We have done several. OIling system needs to be very good with most using accusumps on some conversions due to crappy oil pans ala 240SX conversions.

Also very smooth valvetrain so you can rev the engine with no fear of valvetrain carnage.

Just FYI Rhys Millen used the ASA Hotcam (.525-.525 226-236 110ls) with GMPP LS6 heads in his 04 GTO. That should have a very strong torque band. Not saying that's the best cam but with some 1.8 rockers makes it .556 lift which would be similar to many aftermarket cams. I'd say get something between a 224 dur and 230 dur under .600 lift.

go to TSP website and look for rotating kits.look at a thunder racing cam pkg ,or a tsp cam pkg.you can find used 243/799 heads for $400,a used ls6 intake for $300.if you use stock rockers get the comp trunnion bearing upgrade.get the valve train last after you have most the engine parts .

Agree with nemesss
I would go 5.3 with custom cam/ls6.
Good Luck..

I guess nobody bothered to ask but what kind of car is this motor going into? That would help narrow down what combo would be best suited to your needs
